Grid Opener
PORTLAND W Oregon State
and Iowa State were expected
to arrive in Portland for work
; outs Friday, prior to their foot
.ball game Saturday night at
-Multnomah Stadium. The game
: starts at 7 p.m. standard time.
' It will be the first meeting in
history between the teams, and
:a memorable one for a number
of reasons.
'. Fans expect for one thing to
-see a duel between two of the
'-nation's most explosive backs
Dave Hoppmann of Iowa State,
who led the country in total of
; fense last year, and Terry Baker
of Oregon State, an All-Coast
,' selection as quarterback who has
. accounted for 2,703 yards in two
-seasons. '
Hoppmann, who divided his
, time between quarterback and
halfback In his team s 14-7 open
'ing win over Drake last week
end, is expected to operate full
time at halfback this week. That
will increase the threat of his
running ability. Larry Switzcr
. will take over as quarterback.
Baker, who was under wraps
- much of last year forbidden to
'run until the last 10 minutes of
' each game also will be turned
loose, coach Tommy Prothro of
: Oregon State said. It will be
Oregon State's first game.
" It also will he the first con-
- test between Prothro and his
former Oregon State assistant,
Clay Staplcton, now Iowa State
; coach.
Prothro said he respected
Stapleton's talents, but thought
' he had a winning team at Ore
gon State. Then he Rot the
. scouting reports on Iowa State's
victory over Drake.
; "I feel just like the poker
"player who's convinced he has
the best hand, then gets beat
en," Prothro said.
Nevertheless Oregon State is
! regarded locally as a one-touchdown
favorite.
Weather forecasters say it will
be cool wtlh some clouds, but
no rain is in the offing.

Minnesota handed Detroit
three unearned runs in the first
inning, and that was all right
handers Phil Regan and Terry
Fox needed to subdue the Twins
5-1 on eight hits Thursday.
The outcome pushed the idle
New York Yankees a notch clos

Magic number for the Bomb

with the Twins trailing by 4'5i
games. The Yankees have eight
games left, the Twins seven.
Al Kaline helped Began fur

slashed three hits, including his
28th home run a new one-seasonal
high for the classy Tiger
outfielder.
Norm Cash also had a big hit,
singling home two runs in the
first inning burst from which
the Twins never recovered.
Regan (11-9) thwarted sev
eral Minnesota threats with
clutch pitching. He struck out
one and walked four. Fox re
lieved Regan in the ninth after
two singles and protected the
victory retiring three men in
order.
Zoilo Versalles spoiled Re

homer to left in the bottom of
