U.S. is keeping a watchful eye on Castro Cuba in the wake of reports
that large shipments of heavy military equipment and several thou
sand Soviet technical personnel have been landed there in recent
weeks. Cuban exile sources claim some of the equipment includes
missiles. Newsmap above shows airline distances between Cuba and
major American cities, which are roughly equivalent to missile

South Koreans Plan Casino
At Rhee's Old Han Retreat

Koreana are getting ready to
open one of tho world's larg
est gambling casinos to cater
to American soldiers.
They've taken the old Han
River retreat of former Presi
dent Syngman Rhee on tho
outskirts of Seoul and turned
It into what a Hollywood
movie producer called "the
las Vegas of the Orient."
The movie producer is Steve
Parker, better known as the
husband of actress Shirley
Maclaine, who has been hired
to drum up publicity for the
project and line up some top
stateside talent.
Parker just returned from a
survey of the site, full of
praise and amazement.
"As many places as I have
seen in Vegas and Europe,"
he said. "I have never seen
anything that could surpass
this."
Parker said the project now
Is "about 80 per cent com
pleted." Work will be finished
by Nov. 30 and the formal
opening is set for Dec. 20.
The casino is only part of
the huge hotel and recreation
complex that the Koreans
hope will earn them plenty of
dollars from the 50,000
American soldiers stationed
in Korea.
They also hope that it will
draw a lot more tourists to
Korea. It will, too, Parker
predicted.
The project goes under the
unlikely name of Walker Hill,
Incorporated. It gets the name
from tho late Lt. Gen. Walton
H. Walker, who was killed
while serving as the first com
manding general of the
Eighth U.S. Army in the Ko
rean War.
The five hotels included In
the complex also arc named
after U.S. Army generals who
played key roles in tho Ko
rean War. They are Gen.
Douglas MacArlhur, Matthew
Ridgcway, Maxwell Taylor,
James A. Van Fleet and Ly
man L. Lemnitzcr.
Although it is a private en
terprise, Parker said "the gov
ernment is 100 per cent be
hind It."
Officially, U.S. Army of
ficials in Seoul are not for it;
but neither are they against
it.
Privately, the word is that
they are all for it.
"I certainly am very ex
cited about it," Parker said
"I was very impressed. I can
sec that it is going to be a
big thing for Korea. They
are planning on diverting
some of the tourists from
Japan and Hong Kong and I
personally believe they are
going to do very well."
Parker said the Koreans
"have been very smart about
the gambling."
He said they have brought
in advisers from Las Vegas
and even have set up a croup
ier school.
"The gambling facilities
certainly are as good as those
at Las Vegas," Parker said.
"But what is more important
is that they have taken the
advice of the men from Vegas.
They are going to run it
straight."
"It has got In be straight
and strict," Parker said. "The
Koreans are very aware of
that and that is why the gov
ernment is going to do the
supervising."
What impressed Tarkcr
most was the prices.
"Listen," he said, "The
largest suite they have in the
hotels will only cost $12 a
day. The regular rooms, of
course, are much cheaper. It
is designed for the soldiers.
It Is designed so that they will
have a place to go and spend
some time and have a good
time without getting clipped.
"Tho rates are fantastically
low. But in the long run it is
going to earn them some
money."
Parker said he was going
to Hollywood early in Septem
ber to begin lining up some
American talent. It is his
plan to. bring some "really
big name" American enter
tainers to kick off the Dec. 20
opening.
He declined to say who he
was attempting to get for the
opening. But a source close
to Parker said he was nego
tiating for Frank Sinatra,
Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean
Martin. .
Parker said he hoped to he
able to get the same enter
tainers to put on some Christ
mas shows for the troops
along the truce line.
Al Ricketts, entertainment
columnist for the military pa
per U.S. Stars and Stripes,
accompanied Parker on his
visit to the project. He was
just as enthusiastic as Parker.
"It's utterly fantastic," said
Ricketts. "There is nothing
to match it in Asia. It's the
biggest tiling outside Las
Vegas."
In addition to the gambling
rasino and five hotels, the
$5.5 million complex includes
indoor and outdoor swimming
pools, watcrskiing facilities on
the Hun River, a 500-scat
night club, bowling alleys,
riding stables, tennis courts,
speedboats, bars and restaur
ants. A nearby golf course
also will be available for use
by UO guests.
