Revealing a natural ability and genteel appeal, the young ster's controlled, moving por trayal of a stutterer provided CBS-TV's "Steel Hour" with an unexpected boost after ' it had produced a series of stinkers. He got top-notch support from Glenda Farrell, who, as his mother, secretly gets him a mail room job when he freezes at in terviews; Simon Oakland as his blustering but good-hearted boss, who builds his self-respect and invites him to join a bowling team; and Cynthia Pepper, vid eo's "Margie, in the role of a co-worker who encourages him. The production dwelt touch- ingly on a universal theme: Man's inhumanity to man. Unaffected Acting In one scene, a busy secretary remarks to the nervous Sands: What's the matter? Are you tongue-tied or something?" In 'another, children tease him by singing a takeoff on "K-K-K- Katy." After a vain attempt at getting a job, he comes home and tells his mother: , 'I talked slow ... I had al ternate words ready." Few vet eran actors could touch the heart-strings in the unaffected way that Sands did. Finally, the mother gets him the job, unknown to him; she has the mailroom boss accept him on his own to restore his confidence. In a terse, beautiful scene, the boy says, "I stutter a little bit." "So what!" replies the boss. The boy, 18, " Improves and feels his world is perfect until one day when he knocks over a $750 machine. The boss blows up, and accidentally tells about the mother's part in landing the Portland's Channel 6 has cheduled specials for tonight at 7:30 and 8 o'clock.
