Television in Review Death of 'Accent' Lamentable Event By RICK DU BROW or the United Press International HOLLYWOOD The follow ing fact speaks best for itself: Thursday night, CBS-TV killed Its "Accent" series, a colorful weekly look at American per sonalities, places and history, and will replace it with "Mister Ed," a show about a talking horse. Why? Don't be silly. Money. "Accent," which was switched from a weekend afternoon slot and given a night-time showing this summer, was one of the better programs on the air. a fine example of how to combine entertainment and education. Thursday night, it bowed off with "Pearl Harbor: Unforgot ten," a change of pace from lighter subjects but an often moving half-hour from the site of the 1941 Japanese attack. The recorded voices of per sons who were at the scene on Dec. 7, 1941, were interwoven dramatically with an educated camera that scanned the area which Japanese planes turned into a graveyard of American ships. Poignant Voices Some of Ihe voices were poig nant. One person remembered creams of "War! War! War! Another said: "I was mad. I was an Army reserve officer, and I put on my uniform. In sharp counterpoint, host John Ciardi cut from time to time lo a young petty officer, who was not yet born when the attack took place but was the guide on a boat that took tour ists on a Pearl Harbor trip. The sailor's cold, almost naive re citation of the historical facts gave the show its sought-after effect of illustrating how the Infamous day is now just a relic to a new generation. Perhaps the most moving mo ments came in a visit to the shrine at the site of the final resting place of the USS Ari lona. The main deck of the Ari zona is only eight feet below the water's surface. Amid all the talk of improved Informational programming, and the cancellation of "Accent." it is interesting to note that none of the three networks has sched uled single new documentary news type show for prime eve ning time in the coming season. Entertainment First Ciardi, poetry expert for the Saturday Review magazine, wrote of "Accent" in the publi- cation's Sept. 1 issue, with jus tifiable pride, that it had "a firm grasp of the fact that TV cannot afford to dabble in ideas unless it remembers to Be enter tainment first." But. he adds, the series "Has can be, the network has only to put up the cash." Ciardi also wrote with droll humor that he likes to watch the "stinkers" on television. "Mister Ed" should add to his pleasure. In July. Richard Nixon ap peared on NBC-TV's "Your First Impression." Thursday, his California gubernatorial foe, Gov. Edmund Brown, was on the same show. NBC said Brown asked for equal time and was granted it immediately. The Channel Swim: Maurice Chevalier guests Sept. 16 on CBS-TV's "Who in the World" . . . Robert Q. Lewis is tem porary host of NBC-TV's "Play Your Hunch" for two weeks starting Oct. 1; regular emcee Mcrv Griffin quits to start his new daytime variety show. ABC-TV airs its heralded on-the-spot special about Soviet education, "Meet Comrade Stu dent," Sept. 28. . . The yearly debut of "CBS Reports" on Sept. 19 deals with teen-age smoking. Two soap operas were canceled: NBC-TV's "Our Five Daugh ters" and CBS TVS "The Brighter Day." CBS-TV's reruns of the "Lucy Desi Comedy Hour" topped the average audience ratings for the two weeks ending Aug. 19. . . Impressionist Frank Gorshin bowed out as a regular panelist on the same network's new quiz show, "Stump the Stars" which stars Sebastian Cabot. Backes is accused of stealing a camera on Aug. 16 from the office of the E-A Auto Service Market. 3329 Franklin Blvd. Chet Huntley present a look at an ancient English shrine, demolished by the Nazis and re built along strictly modern lines, tonight at 10:30 on Chan nels 13 and 8. Viewers will be taken on a tour of the new Coventry ca thedral and reactions from some of the industrial workers of Coventry will be presented. Other Friday previews: 7:30 p.m.. Roaring 20's (9-12) Reruns from this hour scries take over this time spot for three fceeks. Tonight Eddie Bracken plays the role of a former doughboy who decides to buy into the bootleg-beer business. Good Ship Hope (13-8) Ralph Bellamy nar rates a study of the 17-year-old demilitarized Naval hospital ship, privately financed to sail to Asia to teach medicine and heal the sick.
