From Wyoming to Chicago, the stoppage of the nation's third largest railroad meant plant shutdowns, workers laid off, construction hobbled and farm products stranded. Eddie, Teddy Debate Ends On Soft Note HOLYOKE, Mass. lOTD Round two of the celebrated Eddie Teddy debate ended without one hard punch thrown. The televised debate between Edward (Ted) Kennedy, 30, the President's youngest brother, and Atty. Gen. Edward J. Mc Cormack Jr., 38, nephew of House speaker John McCor mack, produced no c 1 e r - c u t issues. The participants, battling for (he Democatic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Kennedy, Wednesday night concluded the hour-long debate by shaking hands like long-lost friends and smiling for photographers in marked con trast to their first meeting. McCormack in the first de bate in South Boston Aug. 27 charged that Kennedy never had worked for a living and was try ing to ride his brother's coattails to victory. But Wednesday night he changed tactics and avoided the personality issue. Kennedy similarly stuck to a detailed discussion of state and national issues. Pipeline Ceremony SWEET HOME liP Comple tion of Northwest Natural Gas Co.'s $500,000 natural gas pipe line to Sweet Home was recog nized in a brief ceremony Wednesday. Among those at tending were Company Prcsi dent Francis F. Hill and Warne Nunn, administrative assistant i Mexico In Chicago, federal mediator Francis A. O'Neill Jr. entered another round of talks with the railroad and leaders of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers in hopes of solving the job se curity dispute which as shut down the North Western since last Thursday. There was no sign of an early settlement in the walk out of 1,000 AFL-CIO North Western telegraphers. The North Western said di rectors of the Farmers Elevated Assn., meeting in Huron, S.D., had charged that the strike was "inflicting staggering losses on the economy of South Dakota." The railroad quoted the as sociation as saying "defense con struction at missile sites, sugar beet crops and farm grain mar ketings are being jeopardized by this union attempt to force the negotiation of . . . job cur tailments on railroad manage ment." The chief negotiator for the nation's railroads in their dis pute with another group of rail unions appealed to President Kennedy to take a hand in the North Western strike. Negotiator J. E. Wolfe said the President "should delay no longer in making a pronounce ment that the striking tele graphers' union is morally bound to' accept the recom mendations of the presidential emergency board" recom mendations which the North Western has accepted. Reports of economic effects came in from almost every point served by the North Western along its 10,565 mile network in nine Midwest states from Chicago to Lander, Wyo. to Gov. Mark Hatfield. With the shocking imprima tur of the Theatre Guild, the play drove another nail into the coffin of live New York televi sion with a tale of a con man who tries to force a lady black jack dealer and her student boy friend into allowing the haul. Phyllis Newman played the lady; Johnny Desmond, a singer, was the con man; and John Kerr, who was too ill to appear in a recent "Steel Hour" presen tation, portrayed the student. He is not likely to feel much better after Wednesday night. The story began with Miss Newman and Kerr wondering how to get enough money to af ford marriage. Miss Newman, who has heard that $250,000 will be accumulated in the cashier's cage on a certain day, suggests that possession of such an amount would be a lovely way to start married life. Dr. Samuel Johnson, who felt that "in mat ters of business, no woman stops at integrity," would have been proud of her. Kerr, however, Is not. He is horrified at the thought and talks her out of it. But Des mond, who has heard about the scheme, thinks it has merit and decides to pull the job himself. Kerr threatens to shoot Des mond, which would have been a fine idea, although the script- To Visit U.S. KINGSTON, Jamaica Ifl Prime Minister Sir Alexander Bustamante plans to visit the United States following the British Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference in Lon don. Officials said Bustamente will leave London for New York either Sept. 15 or 18. writer was a more logical tar get. At any rate, no shooting is necessary because the FBI shows up at the last minute and saves the day by accusing Des mond of an old crime. The acting was non-existent; the directing by Bruce Minnix was misdirected; and the writer, Harold Ogast, should apologize. The view we were offered of a Nevada casino was so childish and ludicrous as to be astounding. As for the scenery, ti looked just like what a set designer who had never been to Nevada would imagine after bad reading. The Channel Swim: Christo pher Plummer and Hope Lange star in a 90-minute production of "Cyrano de Bcrgerac" on NBC-TV Dec. 6. . .
