EUGENE REGISTER-GUARD, Thurs., June 21, 1962 Page 3D Beatty Said Ready to Aim For Record By DICK LEUTZINGER Of the Register-Guard WALNUT, Calif. A Los An geles sports editor reported Wednesday that Jim Beatty's training schedule calls for him to break the American record when he runs the mile here Sat .urday in the National AAU track and field championships. The article said he criticized Oregon's Dyrol Burleson for withdrawing from the mile. Meanwhile, outlining Beatty's 'pre-arranged plans for the sea son, coach Mihaly Igloi had set June 9 as his target date for a world's two-mile record. Beatty hit it right -on the nose, said George Davis of the Los Ange les Herald-Examiner. "Igloi also mapped out his program for Beatty to break the American mile record in the coming weekend and the scratching of Burleson doesn't change that." Beatty rather hesitant to com ment on Burleson's withdrawal from the mile and subsequent entry in the three-mile, said only Heads Card COMPLETE PROGRAM Main Event Dory Dixon, Maurice Vachone, Pepi Gom ez, Billy White Wolf, Kurt vonroppenneim, ai rago Pago, Luther Lindsay. Possibly Beatty was thinking back to the Los Angeles Coli seum Relays when hesitating to comment further on Burleson. It will be remembered that Burly delayed announcing his entry in the mile against New Zealand's Peter Snell some saying so he would gain an edge over Snell by taking him by surprise. It was to no avail, however, as Snell ran away from Burleson with a 24.5 fir.al 220, leaving Burly a distant second. Has Burly's announced with drawal changed Beatty's plans to attempt to set the American record? "As of today, we have not even discussed how we'll run the race the only thing is to make the team," Beatty said. "The team" is the United States team that will face Rus sia and Poland in dual meets later this summer. The first two American finishers in each event in Saturday's AAU qualify for spots on the team. Burleson said Saturday after winning his third straight NCAA mile championship that he wouldn't try to qualify for the U.S. team. The Russians don t have much," he said, "and it would only be a trip to Palo Alto no great attraction. Enters Three-Mile However, after talking with coach Bill Bowerman early this week, Burly announced he would enter the three-mile run on Saturday. Plane reservations indicate that Burleson isn't scheduled to leave Eugene until Friday. This being the case, he definitely would not enter the mile since trial heats are scheduled for Friday. There are no prelimi naries in the three-mile. Davis, Tuesday in his column, accused Burleson of "ducking the issue," by not running the mile against Beatty. Burly, the defending AAU mile champion, scored his only mile victory over Beatty in last year's AAU when he won a controversial tactical race in a disappointing 4:04.9. ' Burly passed up several op portunities to race Beatty in doors this past winter, while Beatty skipped the Sugar Bowl mile last New Year's weekend a race won by Burleson and to which Beatty had been invited. Beatty scored his first victory over Burleson at the California Relays in Modesto in 1960, de feating him 3:58.0 to 3:59.2. The following winter he defeated him twice indoors. Since Burly's 1961 AAU win, they haven't met. Glad to Air Views Beatty said Wednesday night he'll be glad to air his views on Burleson's withdrawal Friday which means he's probably wait ing to see for sure whether Dy rol will skip the mile. Eight and possibly nine Oregon athletes will enter the two-day meet which begins here at 10 a m. Friday morning. Jerry Tarr is scheduled to run the high hurdles where the two-time NCAA champ will probably have to face Hayes Jones, the only man to defeat Tarr this season. Harry Jerome, winner of the NCAA 220 last weekend, faces I double trouble when he goes' against Frank Budd and Robert Hayes in the 100 and 220. Both j Hayes and Budd have run the ! 100 in 9.2 seconds tne world record. May Skip 220 However, Budd indicated ear lier this week he may skip the 220 to concentrate on the 100 unless he can regain his early season form. Hayes said Wed nesday he may also scratch from the 220 because of the way heats are scheduled. There is only a 35 minute break: De ''. holes Wednesday to beat John .. Nelson of Portland.
