Between the flood of depress ing psycho dramas that reveal ingly emanate from New York, and 'lollywood's pitch that American families live in a su gar plum world like Disneyland, it is a pretty cockeyed picture of this country that video paints. Wednesday night, in the Roger O. Hirson play, Miss Leighton portrayed a teacher who tries to resume her work and family life after three months in a mental institution. Her problem is that neither her father (Bellamy) nor her upright fiance (McCar thy) nor her school principal (Miss Dunnock) feel she is ready to resume. They want her to wait until she is the way she was before. But she is wise enough to realize that she wound up in the insti tution precisely because of the way she lived before a sensi tive soul among insensitive com panions. Finally, denied the right to teach the children she loves, she gets a job in a school 300 miles away and breaks her un satisfactory ties. The play properly made the usual plea to give former men tal patients a chance; but since this is the point of most such dramas, it was trapped into a position ot being unable to be original. On the other hand, it was a quiet and gentle story, which is a tone always welcome on tele vision and was an achievement for Hirson and Director Tom Donovan. And there were ex cellent portrayals by Miss Leigh ton and McCarthy as her unso phisticated banker beau who just wants her to be "normal" again. If, by the way, you think the psycho dramas, along with boor ish "Ben Casey" and All Ameri can "Dr. Kildare" gave televi sion a medical air in the past, you haven't seen anything yet. Next season there 11 be so many medical series your home will feel like a hospital ward. Blame the ladies, it they couldn't talk about their opera tions, halt of them would be speechless, according to in formed sources. And have you ever known one who didn't get goo-goo eyes over a handsome doctor? You'll be lucky if the old lady knows you are around next year. Good old television.
