Previously, the direct-line telephone service was limited to making housing reservations no more than five days in ad vance, according to Fred Brenne, chamber manager. Persons using the service must go to the chamber office. A $1 charge is made to area residents. The service is free to tourists. ACCOUNTANTS NAME OFFICERS Barry E. Lause, office manager of Lane Plywood, Inc. of Eugene, has been named 1962-63 chairman of the Eugene Group of the National Assn. of Accountants. He succeeds Walter L. Mc Kenzie of Eugene. Other officers elected recently to as sume office July 1 are Fayette Thompson, vice chairman; Janice Poor, secretary, and William W. Klopc, treasurer. Committee chairmen named are Gordon A. CAR LOT OPENS Hannum Motors, 8 used car lot special izing in late-model cars, has opened in Eugene at the south west corner of 11th Avcnuo and Oak Street. Owner Roger D. Hannum was employed for the past year with Barker Motors of Eugene and for two years beforo that was with Dunham Motors here. Ho was formerly in the used car business in Grants Pass, where his father, Carl Hannum is a new-car dealer. Hannum said the lot employs two persons and initially is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. standard, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. daylight daily except Sundays. National Bank of Portland will establish a new branch office in Eugene at the Northwest corner of W. Seven th Avenue and Pierce Street within the next 12 months. The announcement was made Wednesday by bank president E. J. Kolar of Portland, who said permission to establish the new branch has been granted from the U. S. Office of the Currency. The branch will be U. S. Na tional's fourth Eugene branch. Present offices include a main branch at 811 Willamette St., and branches at 1000 River Road and at 17th Avenue and Oak Street. There are also branches in Springfield, Cot tage Grove and Junction City. Construction of the new branch will begin as soon as final plans are drawn, said Ko lar. No architect has yet been selected and it has not been de cided when bids will be called. The new Eugene branch is one of seven new branches throughout the state in the planning or construction stages, Kolar said. The bank now oper ates 82 offices in Oregon. Newspaper Press Damaged by Water PORTLAND Wi A block-long rotary press at The Oregonian suffered water damage Tuesday when an automatic sprinkler sys tem was activated. The sprinkler went on after fire apparently started in a stack of waste paper. Cause of the fire is being in vestigated. As key stocks sank to new lows for the day it seemed like a repeat performance of the May 28 sell off. The list recovered smartly from a severe selling wave in the morning and rebounded to show a net gain at noon. In a second drive of selling, the mar ket was harder hit. Many issues were driven down to their worst of the day. The ticker tape lagged for the third time as selling snowballed near the end. Volume for the day was esti mated at 5.5 million shares com pared with 4.69 million Tues day. Whether the market could re sist a selling drive which might drive it to new lows for the year was the big question be fore the session began and it was answered in a turbulent morning. Prices broke to just above the lows reached in the "Black Monday" session of May 28, then rebounded, showing a slight over all advance by lunch time. The ticker tape ran 15 min utes late as the market sank and recovered. Losses of more than a point were shown again by AT&T and DuPont. Earlier they had recouped declines and moved higher. Texaco, Ford, Chrysler, U.S. Steel and Union Carbide were among fractional losers. Cclotex was off more than 2, along with Xerox. IBM was about 5 points lower. and he'll increase your sales." Richheimer, who started with $500 capital in Levittown, Long Island, seven years ago and to day is one of the nation's top remodelers, praised the idea of the DFPA going into the mort gage business so that more low cost housing units can be built. The DFPA's executive vice president, W. E. Difford, made his "swan song" here Tuesday but it was an unusual one. Difford is retiring in Septem ber, but rather than look back for examples of success, he called attention to the problems of the future. He, like Richheimer, warned the manufacturers never to for get that "the customer is really the consumer, not the dealer or the jobber who represents car loads." "You forget the consumer is I the customer and you're a dead : duck. If he's unhappy, you've had it." Paul Ehincer, resident man ager for the Edward Hines Lum ber Co. at Westfir, was elected to the board of trustees Tues day, joining Ehrman Giustina, vice president and operations manager of Giustina Veneer Co., Eugene, who is a holdover mem ber. For the fourth year in a row, the veneer division of Hult Lum ber and Plywood Co., Junction City, received a top safety award. The crew there worked an entire year (in fact, the past four years) without a lost-time accident and carried away the trophy for plants with less than 100,000 man-hours a year. The meeting concludes Wednesday with technical reports.
