EUGENE REGISTER-GUARD, Wed., June 6, 1962 Page 3C Dairy Princess Court Four-H Winner Seeks Crown A three-times champion in 4-H demonstrating (each time with dairy n ducts), Sandra Umphenour seemed destined for the royal court of dairy princesses. Reign of Lane County's Dairy Princess of 1962 will begin with June Dairy ""nth - with her identity to be revealed next Monday at a Coronation Ban quet. Local dairy distributors are sponsors of the contest and will send their fair ambassa dress to Oregon Dairy Princess contest in Portland on June 25. Auburn h aired and green eyed, Sandra, 18, a senior in Thurston High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don ald Umphenour, 6180 McKen zie Highway, Springfield. For the lithesome Sandra, this has been a "regal" spring. Re cently, she was among the five finalists vying for the Miss Springfield title. She specified clothing design and construc tion as her talent and modeled for the judges a fashionable en semble of her own making. A 4-H Club member for nine years, Sandra has collected some 40 ribbons in cooking, sewing, and knitting projects. One year she varied her inter ests by raising a lamb. From the time she began her first foods project when she was nine, Sandra has "loved cooking with dairy products." "My folks owned cows and we always had our own milk, cream and butter," she explains. It was in natural sequence that for her 4-H demonstration contests she chose to show vari ous ways of using cottage cheese, ice cream, and milk. Sandra has attended two ses sions of Oregon 4-H Summer School on the Oregon State Uni versity campus. Attendance is limited to scholarship vinners. She was among the counselors at 4-H Camp, assisted in plan ning the 4-H Style Revue at the Lane 4-H Fair, and is a former officer of 4-H Empire Builders, countywide club for 4-H teen agers. At Thurston High, she Is sec retary of Future Teachers of America, and is active as a member of Thespians, Future Business Leaders, Girls' League and the Girls' Recreational Assn. For picnics or teenage parties, Sandra's favorite dessert is "Homemade Ice Cream" and below is the recipe she shares with her friends: Scald 1 quart whole milk and 1 quart rich cream. Gradually stir into mixture: 2 cups sugar, 4 eggs, beaten, 1 teaspoon salt, 3 tablespoons salt, 3 tablespoons vanilla. Pour into a one gallon ice cream freezer container and fill to within 4 inches of the top. Freeze with one part salt to 10 parts ice. SANDRA UMPKKNOUR Princess Candidate Open House Fetes Paynes NOTI Open house will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Payne on Vaughn Road near Noti, Sunday from 1 to S p.m. standard, 2 to 6 p.m. daylight, honoring them on their 25th wedding anniversary. In the event of the rain, the party will be held at the Noti gymnasium. Friends and rela tives are invited. Mr. and Mrs. Payne have spent most of their married life at McKenzie Bridge, the last six years having been spent at Walton and Noti. They have one daughter, Erlene who is a freshman at Elmira High School.
