As the days grow longer and screens replace storm windows, television gives a three-month vacation to such descriptive words and phrases as dynamic, original script, fresh approach, novel and, of course, live broadcast. It is quite beside the point that these descriptions often prove quite Inaccurate and misleading. In their place come words which the viewer must with equal suspicion if not down right cynicism. These include re-runs of selected episodes, and repeated by popular demand. Television is on the thres hold of its annual season of re peats, and one of the most closely held secrets of the big industry is the technique used in selecting, out of 26 or 39 programs in a scries, 13 or more for re-running. Last season, a method in se lection was readily discernible in action, adventure, western and private eye series. The in dustry was beginning to be un comfortable about mounting complaints of unnecessary and excessive displays of brutality and violence. It appeared the shows were picked on the basis of the number and longevity of the fights and the number of corpses sighted in a half hour or 60 minutes. This year they are probably going back to picking numbers out of a hat. William F r a w 1 e y, who played Vivian's husband, is un available, being tied up with an important part in Fred Mac Murray's "My Three Sons," a comedy hit renewed for a third season on ABC. And, of course, Deal Arnaz would hardly be casting director's choice for the love interest. The new show has no name yet but it is set in CBS' Monday night schedule. Rocket Test Fizzles Out CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. Wl An Air Force attempt to launch a secret payload, report edly to test heating and other re-entry characteristics, failed Thursday when the second stage of the Blue Scout carrier rock et did not Ignite. The three-stage projectile darted skyward right on sched ule, spewing a trail of white smoke from its solid-fuel en gine. The smoke trail ended abruptly when the first stage burned out, indicating a fizzle in the second stage. Enforcing a recently an nounced blackout on informa tion about military space launchings, the Defense Depart ment declined to give any infor mation about the intended mis sion. Informed sources said the 500 pound payload was to strcar to an altitudo of 86 miles, then slam back into the earth's at mosphere at 12,500 miles an hour. Purpose of the flight, the in formants said, was to tost re entry conditions which might be encountered by future manned and unmanned military space vehicles. This heroic soul was one of a number of assorted citizens and officials who appeared on an in formative and humorous pro gram, "The Taxed American," which CBS appropriately offered on the eve of Friday the 13th. The second part of this pro gram about tax loopholes will be shown next Thursday. As a public service, CBS might have presented that stuff about loop holes this week instead, before April IS, when it could do some good. Ths week's show, hosted by Reporter Harry Roasoncr, was a brief primer on the U.S. Inter nal Revenue Service, including a preview of a giant data proces sing system centered in Mar tinsburg, W.Va., which some day will record on electronic tape every detail about taxpay ers and their filed returns. The program noted that American wage earners are the biggest source of income in his tory. And there was an inter view with Internal Revenue Commissioner Mortimer Caplin, in which it was revealed he was a former college boxing cham pion, a useful background for a tax collector. Mortimer said happily that most persons just dont have the chance to cheat on taxes. You're right, Mort. It costs too much. There were good shots of tax agents auditing returns for citi zens who apparently did not know they were being photo graphed, and of a federal man telling a phone caller: "Your wife is always an exemption, never a dependent." I guess it all depends on how you look at it. Others interviewed included Keith Funston, president of the New York Stock Exchange, who felt ordinary citizens would be hurt by pending legislation that i would extend the withholding tax to dividends and interest; : and Vincent Sardi, owner of the famous New York restaurant, Sardi's, who felt most of the expense-account users who fre quent his place would really rather eat at home. Not me, Vince. Your place j any day. J KATU-TV . Two programs, one entertain ing and another very informa tive, will be presented for tele vision viewers tonight. Leonard Bernstein gives a raft of gifted young performers. ages 13 to 32, a chance to shine on Young People's Concert on Channel 6 at 7:30 p.m. Watch the three assistant conductors separately lead the orchestra, a double-bass soloist and duo pianists in music by Mozart, Bloch and Rossini. Especially entertaining is the second half of the program when all the soloists ring in for "Carnival of the Animals." Chet Huntley will present an informative half-hour program titled "Spring Comes to the Wall," at -0:30 p.m. on Chan nel 13. On-the-spot films cover the 32-mile length of the wall in Berlin, showing the signs "KZ," which mean concentra tion camp to the West Germans who painted them there. Other Friday previews: 8:30 p.m. Hockey (8) Port land and Spokane vie in the final game of the Western Hock ey League Southern Division playoff at Seattle. 9:30 p.m., Age of Kings (7) "The Rabble From Kent." The Movies . Friday Night 7:30 p.m. (2) "The Senator Was Indiscreet." William Pow ell, Ella Raines, Peter Lind Hayes. A bird-brained senator lets a hot political diary get out of his hands, and it may spell doom to his machine. Side-split ting farce comedy, a laugh a second. Biting satire, hilarious dialogue. Don't miss it! (1947 good). 11:15 p.m. (13) "Illegal." Ed ward G. Robinson, Nina Foch. Well acted but poorly scripted story of the rackets and one couples involvement. Jayne Mansfield has a brief scene or two. (1955 fair). 11:15 p.m. (12) "Incendiary Blonde." Betty Hutton, Arturo DeCordova. Entertaining musi cal framed in a fictitious screen biograph of famous speakeasy hostess Texas Guinan. Good mu sic from the prohibition era well done by Miss Hutton. (1948 good). 11:30 p.m. (9) "Born to Be Bad." Joan Fontaine, Robert Ryan, Zachary Scott. Ruthless female hides behind an inno cent exterior, but eventually re veals her true self. Fashionable, romantic drama, good for the ladies. (1950 good). Saturday Daytime 12:30 p.m. (9) "Ride a Vio lent Mile." John Agar, Penny Edwards. Below average west ern, poorly acted. Civil War tale with "get the message through" theme. (1957 poor). 1 p.m. (6) "The San Fran cisco Story." Joel McCrea, Yvonne DeCarlo. Two miners arrive in San Francisco and find the town desperately in need of law and order. (1952 no rating available). 2:30 p.m. (13) "Starlift." Doris Day, Gordon McCrae, Vir ginia Mayo, Gene Nelson, Jan ice Rule, Ruth Roman, and a host of stars. All the Warner Brothers stars get together in this one to entertain the troops. Thin plot line series merely as a wait between acts and the acts are hardly worth it. (1951 fair). i 3:05 p.m. (9) "Rockabilly Baby." Virginia Field, Douglas Kennedy. Ordinary story of a teen-age girl whose mother was a well-known stripper. Les Brown's band throws in some music to aid this lightweight musical. (1957 fair). 3:30 p.m. (8) "I Dood It." Red Skclton, Eleanor Powell. Red's many fans may like this zany slapstick but it's not one of his best. Romance of a pants pressor and a movie star is load ed with trite situations and forced humor. (1943 fair). 4:30 p.m. (2) "Man-Eater of Kumaon." Sabu, Wendell Corey. Hunter wounds a tiger, then trails him when tho beast ter rorizes the community. Inter esting jungle melodrama. (1948 fair). last three acts of Shakespeare's Henry VI, Pat Two," will be shown. 9:30 p.m., Bell Telephone Hour (13-8) "Springtime in the Park" features sweet songs, love songs, lonely-sad and col lege songs to spell out the moods of a Sunday in the park. It is a light hour of music with Lanny Ross, Tommy Sands, Sandy Stewart, Jo Stafford and the Whiffenpoofs in charge. The only change of pace comes from pianist Jose Iturbi, who plays his own composition, "Fantasy for Piano and Orchest, and Al- legra Kent and Gene Nelson, Titan Plant In Operation HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah ID The start of mass pro duction of America's Minute- man missile was signaled Thurs day when the first of the sleek 6,300-mile weapons rolled from a new assembly plant at this northern Utah Air Force base. Eventually some 800 are ex pected to be turned out here for shipment to launching bases throughout the west. The solid fueled ballistic weapons system is scheduled to become opera tional this summer. Maj. Gen. T. P. Gerrity, chief of the Air Force's ballistic mis sile program, spoke at brief ceremonies marking the rollout of the first big bird. The $11 million Minutemari assembly plant here is known as Air Force Plant 77. The first 150 missiles will go to the site near Malmstrom AFB in Montana. who join forces for a lovers' ballet. 10 p.m., Twilight Zone (6) There's humor in this program as big, friendly Andy Devine plays a small town liar who can't believe his eyes when spacemen show up and want to take him back to their planet. 10 p.m., Target Corruptora (9-12) Excellent episode titled "Journey Into Mourning." A dis turbingly believable, yet too melodramatic, look at the plight of the migrant farm worker. Keenan Wynn is perfect as the "cruel boss" who virtually shang hais ignorant farm workers with false promises, and treats them like animals thereafter. There is violence on the program but it's the justifiable kind, not just thrown in to liven up the pro ceedings. 10:30 p.m.. Eyewitness (6) A look at Algiers since the ref erendum vote of last Sunday, including films, comment and interviews with Algerians. Elder G. W. Liscombe Speaks Saturday Elder G. W.
