Thirty-two persons, meeting last week with the market ing and development committee of the Eugene Chamber of Commerce, heard details of services offered by the newly formed Oregon Inventors Council. Larry Dlnncen, representing the State Department of Planning and Development, reported that the new council has been augmented by 33 of the state's leading scientists, engineers and industrialists. They have agreed to serve on the council's technical board of consultants. For a $10 fee, he said, to cover servicing costs, an in ventor's brainchild will be evaluated by a panel of special ists on the board. The evaluation will include a report to the inventor recommending what steps should be taken to develop the invention. Wherever possible, inventions showing promise will be referred to industries and investors, he said. Persons wish ing the service must submit "disclosure forms" and informa tion on their inventions. Checks are payable to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in care of the Oregon Inventors Council, 4019 S.W. Canyon ltd., Portland. The Eugene committee will hold regular monthly meet ings on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the Eugene Hotel. INSURANCE OFFICE EXPANDS Vcrnelda P. Johnson of 1117 High St., Eugene, has been named district super visor in Eugene for the Canada Life Assur ance Co., with headquarters in Portland. Leo D. Hogan, company manager in Oregon, announced this week that the com pany's operations, with office at 1530 Wil lamette St., has been augmented by three salesmen. They are Paul Morris, who has served in the general insurance business in Eu gene for the past eight years; Nick R. Per mit, formerly a sales representative with Trans-Canada Airlines in Calgary, Canada, and Donald R. Stricklan, most recently acting assistant manager with Irish-Swartz Markets in Eugene and a former student of theology at Northwest Christian College. Mrs. Johnson wai transferred to Eugene from the Port land office 18 months ago. She has been in the Insurance business for about four years. The Eugene branch office was established ten years ago, but this constitutes the' first major expansion here by the company. The office handles all types of life insurance, and (ila-M to offer a home-mortgage loan service in the near future, Hogan said. Mrs, Johnson Ciirnmings Not Mourning Comedy Flop By CYNTHIA LOWRY Of the Associated Press NEW YORK OB Actors are a resilient group. They start each new project with high hopes and brave words, but if the show folds prematurely, or if they are clobbered by the critics, they pick themselves up, dust themselves off and get on to the next. Victim of one of the season' croppers is Robert Cummings, whose comedy series on CBS went off the air earlier this month without even finishing a full season. Is Cummings down hearted? "No," said the veteran film and television actor, "We knew, by about the 15th show, that we had too much that it was too expensive to do a full adventure show in a half hour and with airplanes." Cummings wasted no time in mourning the deceased series it is his third and least success ful. "My Hero" had a network season and went into re-runs. "The Bob Cummings Show" had several seasons and is still be. ing repeated profitably. Cummings, unscarred, is in New York rehearsing for an NBC "Show of the Week" com edy, The Action in New Or leans," set for April 15. He it mulling over two ideas for an other series and is planning to star in a summer theater ver sion of "The Tunnel of Love." "The main thing is to stay active even if you are very bad, said Cummings. "After all, an actor is a commodity. The things that are really important for him are his health (he has to be able to deliver the body), a knowledge of law (there are so many loopholes in contracts) and last, I'm afraid abil ity." Much of it is overdone, but the scenes featuring Robert Duval and Lori Heineman are beautifully played and well written. 10:30 p.m., David Brinkley'i Journal 8-13) A moderately interesting examination of New England's manual trawler in dustry, forced to compete with the government subsidized, highly mechanized Russian equivalent.
