Fait 1A EUGENE REGISTER GUARD, Sunday, Jin- 2U W McKenzie Routes These two possible routes or reconstruction of the McKenzie Highway are being studied by the State Highway Commis lion. One, Illustrated by the dotted line, sticks close to the present road between Blue Eiver and McKenzie Bridge. The other crosses to the south side of the river, running along from half to three-quarters of a mile south of the river. Public hearings on the route question will be held in this area before a route is designated, the highway department says. The north bank route would cost an estimated $2.4 million, the south bank $2.6 million. The improvement would link with the rebuilt Clear Lake cutoff leading to Highway 20 on the Santiam for an all-weather route to cen tral Oregon. 1 H to US 20 N Point V ) . This was the conclusion of a report made by Thomas Wright, Salem, executive secre tary of the Legislative Interim Committee on Natural Re sources, Saturday morning in Eugene. Furthermore, Wright told the committee, there are large dis crepancies between the figures reported by state agencies and by the county property assess ing departments. Wright's preliminary report aid that county and stale rec ords are at variance by some 100,000 acres. And the amount of slate ewned land carried on the books I of the State Tax Commission is about 200,000 acres short of the ownership declared by several state agencies, he said. "My preliminary finding in dicates the state agencies are about as confused as I am at this point," Wright said. He said that he is following the committee's instructions to make an "inventory" of state land ownership but that the term is "not apt" at this point. The need for some adminis trative and legal overhauling of the system of keeping land records is "overwhelming" he said. Most inadequate of all the agencies, he said, is the State Land Board, which is made up of the governor, stale treasurer and secretary of state and which has a department charged with administration of state lands. He said the land board de partment reported it would take "one man at least six weeks" to make a report on its ownership and that this contrasts with the report of the State Forestry Dept., which uses a punch card inventory and took just two hours "at a cost less than $50" to make its report. The State Land Board con stantly discovers it owns land by accident," he said. He cited a recent example of a land board proposition to trade some acreage to the U.S. Forest Serv ice. The Forest Service replied that the 279 acres involved was already owned by the state. Kids to See Inside of Jail SEATTLE WV Local young sters who steal cars are going to jail in the future, instead of home to Mama, juvenile court Judge William C. Long decided Saturday. Judge Long said the new pol icy is an attempt to reduce a growing number of auto thefts in the Seattle area. His plan re ceived the endorsement of po lice, sheriff's office, State Patrol and other agencies. From now on, the judge said. juveniles arrested for car theft will be held at the Youth Center pending a court hearing. Mystery Malady Kayoes Twisters at Teenage Dance TIMMINS, Ont. Wl A mys tery malady which knocked out 22 twisters at a teenage dance in the Community Center here Friday night was solved Satur day by blood tests which showed the victims had suffered carbon monoxide poisoning. Doctors were unable at first to pinpoint the cause of fainting spells which hit 21 teen-agers and an adult after a number of twist tunes had been played. The dancers started fainting without warning and were taken to a hospital, where some had to be revived as often as four times. The last dancer had left the hospital by Saturday morn ing. Dr. Aurele Bergeron, who con ducted the blood tests, said the spasms suffered by the dancers would happen after extreme ex ertion such as would be experi enced by doing the twist. The carbon monoxide poisoning was blamed on incomplete combus tion of natural gas with which the Community Center is heated.
