(UPI) President Kennedy had at least one thing in common with So viet Premier Nikita S. Khru shchev this New Year's Day. Both seemed to wonder whether the world would move closer to peace or war in 1962. The leaders of the world's ma jor powers exchanged polite New Year's messages as Ken nedy and his family spent a quiet holiday at their winter va cation residence here. The only announced festivity In the President's New Year's Eve was a dinner dance Sunday night at the home of Charles B. Wrightsman, former oil com pany executive and a world re nowned art collector. The Wrightsman rilace on the ocean is r.ear the estate of C. Michael Paul who has made his winter home available to the Kennedys for the holiday season. The U.S. fUsMoii messages were announced Sunday, along with a Kennedy New Year's greeting to members of the U.S. armed forces on duty overseas. Kennedy and Khrushchev each conceded troubles of the past and hoped for better relations in the future, and each in his own way. Khrushchev spoke of "new hope" that 1962 would he threshold from which there would be "steps in the cause of liquidation of centers of mill tary danger." "There is no doub! that on the state of affairs in Soviet American relations depends very much whether humanity will go towards peace or war, said the Russian message which was signed by Khrushchev and L. Brezhnev, president of the Su- Rites for Dr. Lloyd L. Baker To Be Conducted Thursday Funeral services for Dr. Lloyd Doctor Baker was born Dec. L. Baker, 77, a Eugene dentist since 1911, has been scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday, at the Sim on-Lounsbury Mortuary. Doctor Baker, had continued practicing dentistry until his death Saturday night at his home. He was the last living charter member of the Lane County Dental Society. Doctor Baker died only a few hours after attending the wed ding of his granddaughter, the former Joan Ruth Wastcrlain, to Eugene attorney Gordon Wylie. Also surviving are two daugh ters and a son, Mrs. Edward Wastcrlain of La Jolla, Calif.; Mrs. James T. Wetzel of Urag uay, Dale Lewis Baker of Eu gene; a sister and a brother, Mrs. Pearl Elliott of Eugene, and Walter G. Baker of Salem, four grandchildren and five nephews and nieces. Interment will be in the 100F Cemetery, Eugene. prcme Soviet Presidium. Khrushchev concluded with a pledge, ' there will be no lack of resolution to do everything in its USSR powir in order to ensure durable and lasting peace on our planet." Kennedy, after a preamble of seasonal wishes, said: "The year which is ending has been a troubled one. It is my earnest hope that the coming year will strengthen the founda tions of world peace and will bring an improvement in the relations between our countries, upon which so much depends. It is our grave responsibility to fulfill that hope. As President of the United States, I can state on behalf of the government and the American people that we will do our best to do so."
