Sixteen and Fickle By HELEN BOTTEL FamUr Advisor Dear Helen: I'm 16 and popular. The trouble is that I'm fickle. I hear about a boy who is "dreamy," so I can't wait to get a date, and then after about a week I don't like him any more. My girl friends who are going steady tell me I must be sick, meaning crazy in the head. Am I SICK? i .Dear Sick: No just 16. And to enjoy the chase more than the catch is one of the symptoms. What happens is that you fall for the build up on Glamor-boy and when you get him you discover he was nicer from a distance. Most girls outgrow this "fickleness" before they leave their teens. Those who don't may o through several hus bands and are the type who never leave their teens, mental ly. But, even so, they aren't "sick," just man-crazy. . Dear Helen: My doctor has put me on a diet, and I go along with it because I have diabetes. But scales yet? I have to weigh everything, and in grams. Don't you think this is carrying things a little too far. After all I'm pretty good at guessing TOO MUCH TROUBLE. Dear TMT: Your doctor's the doctor and if he has scaled you down to grams, don't come complaining to me. Stick to that diet like your life depended on it because it does! . , Dear Helen: ' . I am in the seventh grade. All the kids I know my age are wearing loads of lipstick, mascara, eye shadow, rouge and any thing else they can think of. I only wear a touch of lipstick, so I am not "one of the crowd." I want to be popular but to do so I have to wear all that i stuff, and I can't stand it What should I do? ' OLD-FASHIONED TYPE Dear OFT: Don't! I When girls first discover make-up they often overdo it. They'll tone down in a few months, with (I sincerely hope!) the help of their parents and teachers. Dear Helen: , Just because some mothers are square and don't let their 12 and 13-year-old daughters stay out after 10:30 (except for special occasions), you don't have to agree with them! I'm 12 and came in from a party at 11:45 and my Mom didn't say anything next morning except, "Did you have a nice time, dear?" We're a respectable group of kids and we're always having parties that last lots later than 10:30 NOT CURFEWED Dear Not: If your mothers approve, then It's none of my business when you come in. (But I have a sneaking hunch your mothers would bless the first brave soul who dared come out squarely for a time-limit.) Dear Helen: It's been five years ago that I married a man and now have two youngsters by him. Now I found out that he was married before and didn't get a divorce from his first wife who has two children. He left me about a month ago and I heard he got married again, only we're not divorced. Should I try to catch up with him and demand support for my kids or what? MRS. (?) SAM Dear Mrs. (?): If the authorities catch up with Marryin' Sam, HE'LL be getting support as non-paying guest of the State, Your best bet is to apply at the State Employment office and start supporting yourself. Letters addressed to Helen Bottel, care of Eugene Register. Guard, will be given personal attention if stamped, self-ad-dressed envelope is enclosed. (Copyright, 1961, King Features.)
