Harlan Andrews had been a
bridesmaid for two years. -.
But the North Eugene senior
ranks Saturday as the state's fast
est prep miler this year after
running a 4:19.2 Friday night in
the annual Lane A-l track meet
at Springfield.
' He didn't even make it to the
state meet last year which was
won by. Springfield's Fred Del
linger. He whipped Dellinger Fri
day night for the second time in
two 1961 meetings.
Andrews led an onslaught oh
the sub-district records as seven
went by the boards and one was
tied. And he helped North Eu
gene dethrone Cottage Grove as
the meet champions.
. North Eugene, winning seven
of the. 14 events, finished with
129 points. Cottage Grove fol
lowed with 104, South Eugene

and Willamette SY.
It was a night of fine marks de
spite cold weather.
Bob Graham of North Eugene,
already leading the state, upped

Tom Finucane had walked to
start the inning. A wild pitch, an
error, and infield hit and a field

jump record with a leap of 6-2.
He narrowly missed at 6-3V4, the
best in Oregon this year.
Jim Easley of Cottage Grove
had dashed 100 yards in 9.9 sec
ondsa tenth off his 9.8 earlier
this year to beat the 10 -flat
record Easley shared with two
others.
Easley had come back with
a 22.6 clocking in the 220 to tie
the meet record.-
Mike Hodges of South Eu
gene had heaved the javelin
184-11 for another meet mark.
Gordon Payne of South Eu
gene had clocked 50.6 in the 440
for still another new record.
And South Eugene's Wilson
Jewett, returning to early season
form, had soared 12-11 in the
pole vault for the final record.
North Eugene's Pat Helfrich,
winning both the hurdle events,
joined Easley and Graham as
double winners. Helfrich toured
the low hurdles in 20.2, a tenth
off the meet record and two-
tenths off the state's 1961 best
Andrews had beaten Dellinger
but once before in the mile and
that was three weeks ago. Then,
as Friday night, Andrews went
wire-to-wire. :
The North Eugene Miler was
clocked in 61, 66.5, 67, 64.7 for
the quarters. Dellinger was right
on his heels throughout and was
credited with a 4:19.8.
It was the best ever for And
rews and Dellinger was just short
of his 4-J8.5 best of last year. The
winning time was eight seconds

ble. But Larry Randall of Thurs

the wire in the 880. Both were
timed in 1:59.8.
Jewett, who had gone 13 feet
early in the season, missed on
three tries at 13-3. The best in
the state this year is 13-3.
The top five in each event
qualified for the District 5-A-l
meet, which will be held Thurs
day night at Springfield.

pauf had started and finished two
games, On May 10, he pitched
his third shutout. He issued only
three bases on balls and, al
though he gave up 15 hits, struck
out 21 . batsmen in the three
games.
Also zero-zero-zcro in the earn
ed run department were Lutz, Ry
bak and Page of Salem, who had
appeared in nine, five and two
innings, respectively.
Tied for the strikeout lead with
24 each were Jack Aker of Lew
iston and Fred Rick of Tri-Cities,
Rick got his two dozen over a 28-
lnning stretch, while Aker ap
peared in just 21 Innings.
.Walt O'Neil of Tri-Cities and
Moe Morhardt of Wenatchee dom
inated the hitting statistics.
O'Neil 's . 429 in 42 times at bat
was the best percentage, and he
and Morhardt were tied in two-
base hits with five each,
Morhardt led the runs-batted-in
column with 17, hits with 19 and
total bases with 33.'

FRESNO, Calif. Oregon shattered the
American four-mile relay record Saturday with
a 16:29.3 clocking, just 4.1 seconds off the world
record.
Dyrol Burleson, the Wcbfoot junior who last
year become the United States' second sub-four-minute
miler, anchored the record with a blazing
4:00.3 mile.
The mark came In the 35th annual Fresno
Relays in a race that brought together three of
the nation's finest four-mile teams Oregon,
Oregon State and Houston.
But the Oregon team of sophomore Vic
Reeve, senior George Larson, sophomore Keith
Forman and Burleson turned it into no contest.
Burleson finished 100 yards ahead of Dale
Story, running anchor for Oregon State.-
The time clipped 23 seconds off the listed
American record of 16:52.6 set in 1952 by an
AAU team. And it broke the pending record of
16:50.4 set this year by Western Michigan.
It was Forman who decided the race as the
former Portland prep star pulled away on tha
third lap of his third leg and went on for a
4:05.3 effort. Reeves, a Canadian and the only
non-Oregonian on the team, was timed in 4:09.8
and Larson had 4:13.9.
Oregon State was timed in 16:48.0 and Hou
ston, anchored by Al Lawrence of Australia, was
third in 16:57.6.
Oregon State surged into an early lead but
Reeve quickly got the lead for the Webfoots.
It went to Houston on tho second leg briefly.
Then Forman surged past Houston's Pat
Clohcssy on the third lap of his leg and Ore
gon was in the lead for good.
Burleson, the former Cottage Grove star, was
timed in 57, 61, 62 and 60.3 for the quarters.
Story passed Lawrence to give Oregon State
second but Burleson was running alone.

eighth. He stole second to put the
tying run in position, but the
young righthander retired the
next four batters in order.
Bob Radovich was nearly as ef
fective, topping Blehm in strike
outs 12-9 but leading in walks 7-5.
Dick Mitchell opened the third
for the Ems with a walk. Bob
Barton struck out and Mitchell
advanced on Blehm's sacrifice.
Ron Phifcr and Cap Peterson
both walked to load the bases.
Jesus Alou scratched a. single to
second, scoring Mitchell and
leaving the bases filled but
George Nevins struck out.
Phifer shaved the right-field
foul pole with his second home
run of the season and the 14th
for the Ems in 11 games. That
tied the score in the fifth frame.
