Aeross front 0 of O Worst on TV Poll ' Puts Jackie Two Under Paar By FRED DANZIG Of the United Press International v Television, Radio Highlights NEW YORK (UPI) It's just an idle boast when Jackis G lea son calls "You're in the Picture," his abortive one-shot panel show, TV's worst program. Results of my recent one-snot post card contest to find out how the viewers feel about the worst that TV has had to offer show Gleason's program to be merely third worst. Jack Paar, no less, finished in first place. "The Price is Right" came in second. Behind Gleason, tied for fourth place, were "Whats My Line ana This is Your Life," and "Dobie Gillis" came in fifth. The views of the readers was inspired by Gleason's Jan. 27 half hour talkathon, wherein he tried to claim credit for putting on the champion of all flops. While I agree that his panel show was really dreadful, I also feel that had Gleason tried a little harder, he could have improved it to a point where it became a truly un bearable champion. LOYAL READERS I therefore asked loyal readers to complete the following: 'Jackie Gleason is all wet because the all-time, bottom quality, worst TV show in history is still. . ." and I promised prizes for "The most entertaining replies." The judging is over now and I must say it was a nice little contest to judge because the cards were notably well-written and general ly non-hysterical in tone. You should see some of the unsolicited mail. As for the range covered by the contestants, you name the show and it's probably on the list. There was even a vote for the electronic computer that NBC-TV used in its election coverage. Jokes abounded. One sample: "Candid Camera I no Leica." But here are the ones I enjoyed the most: '. . . 'This is Your Life,' a maudlin, superfluous parade of memories and attributes occa sionally punctuated with people the victim has, probably been avoiding for years." Mrs. Saul Baum, Galveston, Tex. '. . . 'Rivak, the Barbarian,' a sort of Fred Flintstone out of Zorro by Marquis de Sade, a com mercial triumph for the manufac turers of men's grooming aids." M. F. Spence, Jacksonville, Fla PEOPLE AT WORST '. . . 'Price is Right,' which tends to show people at their wont and products at their best." Betty Gamarra, Tiffin, Ohio. "... Unascertaihable due to the monotonous repetition of rep etitious monotony which inter feres with the reshowing of some really inferior progams." J. A. Robertson, Valleio, Calif. '. . . Would love to enter but I find it difficult to narrow things down to one particular show. You didn't specify which night." Lew Runkle, Reading, Pa. The winners all are being sent cultural treasure of the season autographed pictures of Gleason with his ill-fated "Picture" panel. though of sending out, in true Gleason tradition, five-pound wedges of Mother Baccamarra's Mozzarella cheese, but decided it would only make our letter car riers the innocent victims of this whole squence. The Channel Swim: President John F. Kennedy will appear in a tribute to the poet Robert Frost when the CBS-TV program, "Ac cent," makes it debut next Sun day afternoon. Kennedy will speak of the artist's role in Amer ican life and comment on the meanings he finds in Frost's poetry. An original play by Horton Foote, set in Texas in the 1890s but as yet untitled, will complete the season for CBS-TV's DuPont Show of the Month" series on Tuesday, March 21. The cast is headed by Julie Harris, E. J. Marshall and Mildred Dunnock. '-"Perry Como's Music Hall" has cancelled plans to present the three-part musical comedy love story that was to have begun Wednesday. A spokesman for the NBC-TV program said the format didn't play as well as it read. Guest stars remain unchanged. 'Tramp Ship," a full-hour se ries about the adventures of a crew aboard an itinerant freight er, is being developed for ABC- TV's 1961-62 season by Don Fed derson, producer of "My Three Sons." Neville Brand will star. This special attempts a study of the basic problems facing Africa nd. therefore, the- world today. Via films and reports by NBC correspondents here and abroad, it tries to define the differences between and the nature of the problems as they exist in North Africa, South Africa, the Congo, the still colonized area, and the independent states. Also, for an answer to the question: "Can the U.N. solve the African problem? ambassador Adlai Stevenson is asked to participate.
