And then I lost my nerve. I called the operator to call the doctor. When he kept moaning, 'Why did you do it? Oh, baby, why did you do it?' I didn't like to hear it, so I went out in the hall. "The doctor came, and the police, and house de tectives, too. It was so silly: nobody came out of their rooms. You'd think they would come rushing out. I got mad. I kept telling them I shot Eddie Waitkus, but they didn't know who Eddie Wait kus was." Again, the lack of judgment, the twisted values, the mad bid for attention. It gave support to the Rorschach test that indicated schizophrenia. Throughout the period of questioning, Ruth felt that Eddie was with her. Trying to explain his presence, she said, "We talk about the whole thing. I say, 'What are you going to do about me now? You wanted me to do this.' He usually answers my questions. He said, 'Don't you think it would be better to go to some hospital?' I told him I would rather do time in Dwight (a prison) than go to a psychopathic ward. "I kept asking him how he felt about the whole thing, but he kept evading me and I got mad and wouldn't speak to him for the rest of the night. I didn't want to kill him, not his real self, not the self that was with me, his unconscious self. There are two parts of him. The man himself doesn't know anything about this. His other self is with me. It doesn't do anything to me, just walks and talks and keeps me company, like an invisible friend." Finally, the Cook County psychiatrists knew enough of Ruth's thoughts to compare her with those other thousands among the mentally ill who have been treated and rehabilitated. The Felony Court awaited their opinion. Sixteen days after the attempted killing, Dr. Haines forwarded his diagnosis that Ruth Stein hagen was mentally ill a schizophrenic and therefore committable to an institution. A jury of 12 heard the evidence and pronounced her legally insane. She was committed at once to the Kankakee (111.) State Hospital. One of the last questions put to her concerned her attitude toward Waitkus. "If I ever get out of here," she said, "I'll kill him for sure if he ever gets married." In 1950, Waitkus returned to the line-up of the Phillies. In 1952, following doctors' testimony, the State of Illinois discharged Ruth Steinhagen as totally and permanently recovered. While hospitalized, Ruth had become interested in therapeutic nursing. In fact, the interest had helped her recover. After her discharge, she de cided to continue in nursing and today lives a nor mal life assisting othei-s to overcome afflictions. M !
