DI 1-6297 Hatfield Says He'd Prefer Second Term But May Decide To Oppose Morse SEATTLE Wi Oreson Gov. Mark 0. Hatfield said Friday his present intention is to seek re election but he left the door open for a possible U.S. Senate can didacy in 1962. Hatfield, elected in 1958, said he has two choices in 1962 to run for governor asain or seek the Senate seat of Wayne Morse, Democrat. 'At the present time," Hatfield said, "I would prefer the gover nors position, but things may change by 1962. I've been gover nor less than two years and there are still many programs in Ore gon I would like to see accomplished." NIXON VICTORY SEEN Hatfield forecast election of Vice President Nixon as the next president. The Oregon governor added he does not expect to be considered seriously for the vice presidential nomination because both he and Nixon are from the West. Hatfield predicted the GOP vice-presidential candidate will be selected from the Midwest. He said Rep. Charles Hallcck (R-Ind) "certainly is a major contender." Hatfield condemned violence in Portland's newspaper strike and said the recent bombing of news paper delivery trucks hurt the position of bargaining agents. 'Violence in Portland labor dis putes is an isolated affair, and not indicative of general labor violence moving westward," Hat field said. NOTHING NEW Hatfield said that Sen. John F. Kennedy (D-Mass) a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, "offered nothing new when the senator offered earlier this week to look into the Portland newspaper strike. "I don't mind a Republican or a Democrat offering suggestions, because this situation is beyond politics," Hatfield said. "We wet come suggestions from any source." John Kennedy was a new experience. Other contacts with the major candidates for the presidency have been by covering speeches and conducting interviews. Kennedy travels in a converted Convair, a two-engine plane which his family gave him for the campaign. When the airplane was in com mercial use it seated 44 passengers. The craft now carries only 11 persons, plus a crew of pilot, co pilot and a pretty girl who is both the stewardess and Kennedy's secretary. It has a sleeping compartment in the aft section, and cushy seats in the main section. A desk and a typewriter occupy considerable space. Y. (UPI) Richard Amper, 44, press secre tary to Gov. Nelson A. Rockefel ler, and a veteran newspaperman, died at his home of a heart at tack Friday. He had complained of feeling ill only five minutes before he died of what his physician, Dr. N. Luger, said was a coronary oc clusion. In Albany, Rockefeller said his death was "a severe blow to me and to the slate." "Dick Amper was a brilliant newspaperman, a knowledgeable aide, a devoted public servant and a witty and warm - hearted friend," Rockefeller said. Amper left his job as a politi cal reporter for the New York Times to join Rockefeller's staff several months before hus suc cessful 1958 campaign for gover nor. A court announce ment said the divorce action would proceed. Both Miss Sagan and her husband, Guy Schocller, have filed suit, but in France the grounds on which divorce is sought are not made public. Sellard Kennedy was older-looking than I thought he'd be. He is 42 and from a distance looks much younger. He does have a boyish grin and on a platform looks youthful. But, up close, I thought he looked at least his age. When the face is at repose, it shows some wrinkles and the eyes look tired. Other reporters who have traveled with him more than I say he has an "on and off" expression he can look animated and young when he wants to, but in an off-guard minute, he doesn't. When Kennedy gels on the plane, he sits alone in a largo chair to the rear of the wing. He sometimes sleeps in a bed far ther aft. Wednesday, he got on the plane early and slept the half hour it took to fly from Corvallis to Newport. His staff says napping is a favorite habit of his. The candidate has another good campaign technique he doesn't eat the meals served in' his honor. Campaigning for the presidency is a tough job and a man just can't eat "local food" when his stomach is tied up in knots. Many other campaigners do the same thing. The trick is to toy with the food and make a great play of using a napkin to wipe your mouth of the food you don't eat. Gov. Mark Hatfield has the technique down to a fine art. Kennedy does this and then eats a light lunch back on the plane. Tuesday, after leaving the lunch at Roseburg, he had a bowl of soup. Janet Des Rosieis, the pert little gal who does the honors on the plane as the combination stewardess and secretary, knows all these things. She also knows how to make traveling reporters relax. The beer is cold. Howard Baird, the veteran pilot of the plane, enjoys his job. He's been flying such VIP trips for a long time and insists he en joys the irregular hours. "I wouldn't like a job with regular hours," he told me. Baird is a golfer and plays local courses when he can. He remembers last year when weather kept him from playing the Pebble Beach course at Monterey. "The fog was so thick we couldn't see the ball," Baird recalls. "But we could fly . . . quite a deal when the weather is too bad to play golf but good enough for flying." Mrs. Peter Lawford, Kennedy's sister who married the movie actor, doesn't like flying. She's a ground-lover and when a Cor vallis Democrat offered to drive her to Newport, she responded with enthusiasm. I'm not prepared to pass on John Kennedy's physical condi tion, but I do know he totes a lot of medicine in his toilet kit. I spied a little in his hotel room in Portland and found (just by looking from three feet away) six vials of prescriptions. Really, he looks healthy. He is lean and has a good physique. His cheeks are ruddy and his staff says he bears up well under the strain of several speeches and several hundred handshakes a day. Gen. Robert Y. Thornton, who called the meeting, said Friday. Addresses will be given by Erie Stanley Gardner, mystery story writer, and Circuit Judge Virgil Langtry of Portland. Those taking part include law enforcement officials, stale in ilitution superintendents, and representatives of business, labor, parents, teachers, youth groups and churches. There will be panel discussions on the extent of crime, its causes, present efforts to prevent crime, and recommendations of future methods of preventing it. Having watched such newsmen as Sander vanOaker of NBC (Huntly-Brinkley), Blair Clark of CBS, Mary McGrory of the Washington (DC) Star and Bob Ruth of U.S. News and World Report for two days, I've come to the conclusion that it's almost as hard work covering a VIP as it is for him to woo votes. The days are long and the working conditions are rough. This is a business hard on the patience and physical abilities of the participants. Dog Pack Hunted SALEM (UPI) Ervin Ward, Marion County dog control offi cer, has ordered an emergency policy of shooting "on sight" all unlicensed dogs loose in county rural areas due lo sheep losses. Ten sheep have been killed by dogs since last Sunday. Ward said four dogs have been shot but others in the pack are still loose. Writer Says Chessman Should Be Spared HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Mystery writer Erie Stanley Gardner said Friday he thinks Caryl Chess man's life should be spared even though he believes the convict author is guilty. "I'm not a Chessman fan," Gardner told United Press Inter national. "I think the guy is pret ty much of a warped personality. But I hate to see a man executed for a crime where there was no life taken." Gardner said there was no pos sibilily that "The Court of Last Resort, which he originated, would take Chessman s case.
