One of the most difficult ttuatlon a catcher must face l that of
trapping or blocking pitches which bounce Into the dirt. It is easy
for such pitches to bound away from him If he doeBn't take advan
tage of his equipment. He can drop to his knees so that his chest
protector will stop or smother the ball in case It takes a bad hop
to keep him from getting his hands on It Instantaneously.
He should try to catch as many balls as possible with the fingers
of the1 catcher's mitt pointing up. However, the fingers of both
hands should be pointing down when it is necessary to dig balls out
of the dirt.
It is good practice for catchers to play Infield positions at regular
Intervals during batting practice in order to learn how to follow
bounding balls and field them properly, because almost all throwt
to home plate from the outfield come in on the bounce, In addition
to the pitches which hit the ground before reaching them.

pense of Scdgman, Pancho Segura
and others. Sedgman, who under
went an appendectomy yesterday,
doesn't figure in future plans.
'Trabert's Wimbledon victory
gave him a tremendous boost,"
big Jake said. "Now if he can win
the Nationals at Forest Hills and
help up keep the Davis Cup, he'll
really be ripe. He can make a
good pile of dough in two years."
