Mon., June 13, 1955 HT 'ffl, k BUGGY DAZE The past met the present in LaPorte, Ind., recently when a horse and btfggy driven by Frank Hitesman, 75, of nearby Pinola, Ind., came to town on a visit. Both Hitesman, bewhiskered but spry, and the stal lion, Golden Dawn, seem puzzled by a parking meter which hardly resembles the old hitching rack. Hitesman used it anyway when told how the contraption worked. He admitted it has been some time since his last visit. (NEA). Newspapers arc full of store ads urging a material expression oi admiration and affection for the nation's dads. And this year the variety of Items is wide and wild cr than ever. But maybe some merchants arc missing a bet. Dad has changed in more ways than just in the color of his plumage. Some time back women discov ered that the way to solve the problem of the disappearing servants class was to initiate hus bands into the mysteries of house keeping rites. So it's as likely to bo the man of the house who dreams of an electric dishwasher as it is to be the wife. Washing machine salesmen might do well too to watch a trend that could develop fast. This summer various textile firms are bombarding the market with fabrics for wash-'n-wcar clothing. They assure Dad he can dunk one of these suits with ease and after it's dry wear it with aplumb. The next short step is for the husband who never before has given thought to the family wash to be led firmly into the utility room of his ranch house for in structions about washing his own suit. And then, of course, he might as well do the family wash while he's about it. When he isn't in the kitchen today's father is likely to be in the garage or the basement try mg to turn out the book shelves or patio furniture der.ired by the little woman almost invariably a great believer in the do-it-yourself movement for husbands. The market for tools, paints, lumber and maybe (iciger coun ters should offer a gold mine for Father's Day promoters. If it's the standard items of ap parel you want to give father Sunday, the stores are full cf them this year, both in variety and depth. But you may find that father's appearance is changing these days. Kxecutives of a leading suit and accessories chain report . that in the last year or so the shift in men's notions of how they should look has shaved two inches off the shoulders of business suits, trimmed lapels down to 3'a inch es from the former 4'g inches, and tightened trousers at the knoo by one halt inch. Even greater changes have come in the weekend appearance ol the American male-walking shorts, fancier sport shirts and, this year, flamboyantly colored slacks.
