Also, 90 per cent of drivers in volved in accidents hold valid op erator's licenses, showing they have passed driving tests. Cowles said a total of 420 per sons died in Oregon traffic acci dents last year and another 13,- 888 suffered injuries. The total number of accidents in Oregon last year was 59,839. Police Seek Lost Checks Eugeft police said Friday they are still searching for a large number of checks taken this week in an armed robbery at the Ama zon Market, 1711 W. lllh ve., Eugene. . They were arrested by a Junction City policeman shortly after the rob bery as they drove north on High way 99. Police said Friday they had locatefl some of the stolen checks near the highway at Junction City. They asked that anyone finding any of the checks contact the Eugene department. To determine the number of checks still missing, police re quested persons who pashed checks at the grocery last week end to get in touch with the pro prietor, Victor Allen Cone. Health Co-op Meets Friday Charles O. Porter, Eugene at torney, will be the temporary chairman Friday night when the Lane Health Cooperative holds its organizational meeting. The new organization seeks lo provide prepaid medical care for 1,000 local families initially, later expanding. Several doctors are to he hired and others are to be on a consulting basis. Plans are that rental quarters will be used at first. Those who sign membership ap plications Friday night will be considered shareholders and will vote on proposed bylaws and ser vice agreements. This group also will elect a board of trustees and officers, who in turn will desig nate committee assignments. At the meeting, to begin at 8 p.m. in the Lane Electric Coop Building on Franklin Blvd., Bryce Thalman will explain the possibil ity of establishing a credit union as an affiliate of the medical cooperative. The Western Interstate Com mission for Higher Education an nounced Thursday that the men tal health training and research needs and resources of the state will be surveyed in a study fi nanced by the National Institute of Mental Health. The survey committee will be appointed by Gov. Paul Patter son. Kcsearch and training re sources and needs will be inven toried in psychiatry, clinical psy chology, psychiatric nursing and psychiatric social work. The interstate commission pro motes regional cooperation in re search and higher education. Eugene Fire Season Opens This Sunday Building a bonfire in Eugene w ill become a misdemeanor start ing Sunday, Fire Marshal Lester Barker warned this week. A city ordinance establishes a closed season on outdoor fires between May 15 and Oct. 14. Barker said an exception is made in the case of fires built in approved incinerators. Specifi cations for such devices are avail able at the fire department head quarters in city hall. Oil drums with screens across the top don't qualify as incinera tors under the city ordinance, Barker said. Summer bonfires are permitted during periods of wet weather, when Ihe fire de partment will release announce ment approving outdoor fires. Truman Chase On Committee Sen. Truman Chase of Eugene has been named to a seven-man interim committee to confirm any appointments Uiat jnay be made by the governor to the State Board of Higher Education. Also on the committee, to serve until the legislature's 1957 session. are Sens. Howard Belton, Canby; Eugene Allen, Portland; Philip Lowry, Mcdford: J. O. Johnson, Tigard; and Mark Hatfield, Sa lem. The appointments were an nounced Thursday by Senate President .Elmo Smith. Appointments By the governor to boards and commissions must be ratified by the Stale Senate which poses a problem as the Sen ate meets for less than four months each two years. The in terim committees are a practical answer. However, their confirma tions must be later reaffirmed by the Senate. Mill crews controlled the fire-threat before the firemen arrived. The cause of the fire was orig inally described as an electric healing pad ijniling newspapers near Ihe bed of a dog which died of suffocation in the fire. Mrs. Tobey said Friday that there were no papers involved in the fire. She said the drapes which first caught fire were destroyed. . An estimated $300 damage re sulted from the fire. Ih addition to the dog, a pet canary was killed by suffocation. Mrs. Tobey suf fered burns of the fingers when she attempted to rcmivc the dog from the flame-filled room.
