Ore. 1A Fri., May 13, 1955 American Newsman Killed i f . .V-"5 -r Conservatives Hail Election Tories Dominate Council Contests LONDON Ul Conservative hopes for victory in the May 26 parliamentary elections rose Fri day as the Tories chalked up sub stantial gains in borough council contests throughout England and Wales. But party leaders warned against overconfidence. Results from 399 boroughs that had finished counting Friday gave Hie Conservatives a net gain of 310 seats. The Laborites dropped 341 seats to the Tories, Liberals and independents. HARD WORK AHEAD The Labor party lost control of councils in a number of big cities, including Llanidloes, Bolton, Northampton, M or ley, ' York, Reading, Ipswich, Dudley and Walsall. Lord Woolton, Conservative par ty chairman, hailed the results as encouraging but warned: "It will need sustained hard work during the next fortnight to secure a worthy victory at the general election." Thursday's elections took place In 401 boroughs. There were more than 5,710 Conservative, Laborite, Liberal, independent and Commu nist candidates in the field. The elections were fought mostly on local issues. CHARGE INTERFERENCE Campaigning for the May 26 contest began warming up as a Labor party leader accused the United States of interfering. The Laborites also donied Conserva tive claims that a Socialist vic tory would put Britain back on rationing. Woodrow Wyatt, parliamentary undersecretary of state in the last Labor government, told a politi cal rally in Sleaford President Ei senhower agreed to top-level Big Three talks with Russia only to help the Tories win on May 26. "President Eisenhower has no faith in top-level talks," Wyatt declared. "All he is trying to do is to prevent the Labor party from winning the election." if a " tt if',:.; v, a, . v 4 .3 T 1 t " -.. In his formal reply Friday, Coon said: "Senator, T want you to know that I shall be very happy to meet you In public debate on the merits, or demerits, of any time ly subject. However, as seems to be your habit, you have presump tuously jumped to the conclu sion that H.R. 5789 (the partner ship bill) will not have become low by September. "For your Information I do not introduce bills for publicity, or other facetious purposes. I spon sor constructive legislation and work tirelessly for its passage. At no time have I deviated from this practice, and you may be sure that I will not in the pres ent instance." Ike Right About Political Cold War, Says Demo WASHINGTON yB Senate Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas said Friday "leading Republican senators' and not Democrats are waging the cold war of politics with the White House which President Eisenhower once forecast. Johnson recalled Elsenhower's campaign statement before last fall's elections that a "cold war of partisan politics" would break out between the White House and Congress if the Democrats won control of Congress, as they did. HAD SOMETHING After the election, Eisenhower told a news conference the words were too strong for what he had Group to Promote Cultural Relations LONDON im Britain has set up committee to promote closer cultural relations between Britain and Russia. Judicial Council SALEM Ml A bill creating a state judicial council was signed into law Thursday by Gov. Paul Patterson. The council, which will consist of all judges in the state, will study court procedures and mako recommendations to the governor. in mind, but Johnson said Fri day: "It looks like the President had something there. Leading Repub lican senators are making the point that a Big Four meeting at the summit would lead to a sen out to communism." There "may be a cold war" of polities, Johnson told newsmen, but the antagonists are Eisen hower and soipe Republican sen ators who apparently do not trust him to negotiate with the Com munists. Johnson made it clear he re ferred to recent speeches by GOP Senators Knowland of Cali fornia, the minority leader, Bridges of New Hampshire, chair man of the Senate GOP Policy Committee, and McCarthy of Wisconsin. ALL 3 SKEPTICAL All three have voiced skepti cism about Eisenhowers ex pressed willingness to attend a Big Four conference with the heads of state of British, France and Russia. They also have ques tioned the wisdom of trying to negotiate with Red China, as Eisenhower has said this coun try is willing to do. "I think an international con ference could lead to a sellout if our country is represented by stu pid and unpatriotic men," John son said. "But I have confidence in the President."
