Apr. 13, 1955 Bankruptcies Near Record Request for Funds Reveals Figures WASHINGTON i The House Appropriations Committee said Wednesday the coming fiscal year may see the "highest number of bankruptcies recorded in the his tory of the country." It made the observation, with out elaboration, in sending to the House a $450,398,227 appropria tion bill to finance the State De partmenl, the Justice Depart ment, the Federal Judiciary and the U. S. Information Agency for the bookkeeping year starting July 1. During the current fiscal year, the committee said, approximate ly 65,000 bankruptcy cases will be filed, with an increase to 75,000 expected next year. It approved the $1,151,400 re quest for salaries of bankruptcy! referees and $1,650,000 for refer-1 cos' expenses This Is $172,375 more than Congress appropriated for the same work this year. The committee's over-all action j represented a cut of approximate ly 7 per cent in presidential money requests for the agencies to he financed by the bill. The FBI was given the entire $88,000,000 it requested, an in crease of $8,618,000 over funds available for the present year. The Immigration Service was given $44,000,000, an increase of $990,000, to strengthen its border patrol activities. BUT LAURIE SAYS NO The appearance of a marriage license application in Anchorage, Alaska, Monday, for G. David Schine and actress Piper Laurie created an is-it-or-ain't-it situation for the couple, shown together at a Hollywood night club last February. Miss Laurie denied from Hollywood that she plans to wed anyone. Schine, controversial figure in last year's Army-McCarthy hear ings, is in Alaska, where he is an Army private in a military police detachment. Eugenean Named Masonic Official Ray K. Allen, Eugene, was elected deputy commander of Oregon Knights Templar at Mon day's opening session of York Rite Masonic bodies of Oregon at Portland. George F. Ostrnm of Astoria was elected the commander of the grand commandery. The Council of Royal and Select Mas ters was scheduled to meet Tues day, and the Royal Arch Masons were to meet there Wednesday " and Thursday. Other Knights Templar officers were elected Monday, from vari ous parts of the state. He crashed on his return trip to the ship after ferrying Father 1,200 feet thick with solid rock beneath it in 1 location. Atka scientists said they found the blades of a wind generator set up by Adm. Byrd in 1934 still turning. They brought it back for him. The Atka damaged 1 of her 2 propellers in bucking ice but was able to come back home on the other. The Navy plans to send 5 ships to the region next year to land supplies and equipment for the main project the following year. Corsi Ouster Probe Subject Senator Promises Full Investigation WASHINGTON IW A Senate subcommittee will investigate the controversial ouster of Edward J. Corsi as a state Department ad viser on refugee problems. Chairman William Langer (R ND) of the Judiciary Subcom mittee on Refugees announced his gioup will conduct a "full, complete and far reaching" in quiry. He said that presumably Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, who dropped Corsi as a consultant will be called as a wit ness. Corsi, Italian-born former New York state industrial commission er, was named as Dulles' special assistant last Jan. 10 to help speed up the refugee relief pro gram to bring 214,000 refugees into the United States by the end of 1956. He was ousted last Sun day. Sen. Hubert Humphrey (D Minn) sent Dulles a letter charg ing that the Corsi case "rep resents another aberration in the administration of the security program." He said the State De partment had set the 90-day limit on sensitive temporary appoint ments like Cnrsi's under an in terpretation of an executive or der. Actually, Humphrey said, the executive order covering such matters refers only to a "limited period" for temporary appoint ments to sensitive jobs. During that time, security checks are to be made. Humphrey said the State De partment interpretation placing a 90-day limit on such tenure if the check is not completed makes Dulles "a prisoner of your own regulations which you have au thority to amend." Humphrey asked Dulles to sup ply him answers to various ques tions on the security aspect of the Corsi case. Win a Free Gift!
