2A Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore. Wed., Apr. 13, 1955 West Berlin Looking For New Crackdown BERLIN Lfl Communist-surrounded West Berlin looked Wed nesday for a new Red crackdown on its traffic with the Soviet Zone following East German charges that the Western powers have turned the city into a spy center. The Kast German cabinet Tues day night announced the arrest of 521 "Western agents" and the liquidation of "a considerable number of espionage and terror groups." It said these were being directed from Allied-occupied West Berlin. The Red regime said it would take "all necessary measures" to protect the East German state from what it called the West's criminal activities based in West Berlin. West Berlin circles anticipated Reactor Plans Disclosed By Magnuson SPOKANE W Plans for a nu clear reactor which "will create electric power and will substitute for steam plants in the Pacific Northwest" were disclosed by Sen. Magnuson (D-Wash) Tues day night. Magnuson said the Atomic En ergy Commission has budgeted funds for the plant. It will be built at Hanford, Wash., by the General Electric Co. The senator said the "dual pur pose" reactor, first proposed by General Electric 2 years af,v would produce electrical energy and quantities of plutonium for the nation's stockpile. Magnuson said ho was advised the "larger the reactors the cheaper the electricity it can pro duce. At Hanford we already have reactors which are truly mammoth in size." His statement added it is "sound technical reasoning to ex pect that a very large power plant can be built by the people now working at Hanford a plant which will produce electricity cheaper In the Northwest than can conventional steam plants." the Communists would put new restrictions on German moving between the Allied part of the city and the Eastern zone. Many Ger mans live in one area and work in the other. Others visit relatives or friends across the borders. Any West Berliner seeking to enter the East Zone must obtain a special permit from the East German ministry of the interior. Movement between Berlin's West ern and Soviet sectors is still free. Controls on the East Berlin side are normally limited to checks of luggage for anti-Communist liter ature being smuggled eastward or food, cameras and optical instru ments being brought to the West for the higher prices obtainable there. The East German announce ment said Communist secret po lice chief Ernst Wollweber's men had seized 19 American-made radio receivers and transmitters, arms and amunition, poisons and incendiary sets, special cameras forged passes and other equip ment from the arrested "agents." It claimed the American-oper ated radio Rias in West Berlin was organizing the espionage and sabotage on orders from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. , - m JL RUSSIANS GREET AUSTRIAN WITH FANFARE Austrian Chancellor Julius Rabb (hatless) stands before microphones as he and his party of 10 are welcomed in Moscow. Mulcahy, 50, of Yonkers, N.Y., failed to appear in police court on a traffic charge and forfeited the bond. Mulcahy had left 7 Bibles, valued at $150 as bail. By UNITED PRESS Spring erupted again Wednes day with a Texas blizzard, flood- ing rains and dust storms which left 3 persons dead and wide spread property damage through the South. The Texas panhandle city of Dalhart was isolated by more than a foot of snow. In Jackson, Miss., a 3-inch rainfall flooded streels almost up to the level of car windows. In the Southwest high winds kept some of the worst dust storms of the season going for the second day. Many towns in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico were closed in by dust early Wednes day and hundreds of motorists were reported marooned late Tuesday. APRIL WILDNESS The violent weather continued a pattern of April wildness. The northern plains were buried un der the second major blizzard in a week Tuesday and ripping winds have been tearing at the dust bowl. The new outbreak started with 2 tornadoes in Texas, 3 in Arkan sas, and 1 each in Louisiana and Indiana late Tuesday. An identi fied man was killed at Pine Blutf, Ark., when a twister toppled his home. ' The vicious storm pattern then changed quickly, sweeping the Texas panhandle with blizzard snows carried by 63-milc-per-hour winds and dumping 4.21 inches of rain on Greenwood, Miss. At Amarillo, Tex., a newsman said "We got dust, then we got rain, and then we got more dust, Dalhart, a high plains city of 6,000 located 80 miles north of Amarillo, was quickly snowed-in. Heavy ice snapped every tele phone line and most power lines leading into the city and its com munications with the outside world ceased completely. Still farther north, there was a foot and a half of snow at Boise City, Okla. Fog closed in Tyler, Tex., ending an opening day base ball game in the third inning, and dust cut visibility to an eighth of a mile at Big Springs, Tex. The swirling dust appeared even worse farther west. The winds hit 93 miles per hour at Pueblo, Colo., yesterday and a woman carrying a year-old baby was whipped 15 feet in the arr as she stepped from her home. Another Pueblo resident was killed in a car accident during a blinding dust storm. i A third weather-caused death Star Furniture brings you this Carload Purchase of effl&fo Ranges! was reported at Jackson, Miss., when an unidentified woman ran her car into a rain-swollen creek and drowned. Jackson's torrential rains closed 5 city streets and water was almost up to car windows at 1 intersection. Some highways leading into the state capitol city were covered with water, almost stalling traffic, and at least one family was evacuated when water from a drainage ditch sloshed through their home. TORNADIC WINDS Elsewhere in Mississippi, lor nadic winds blew in two hangar doors at the Vicksburg airport, damaging airplanes inside, and 4 homes were unroofed at Her nando. A twister at Baton Rouge, La., ripped through a hardwood for est, tearing down telephone poles and wires, while a "light tornado" touched down in Indianapolis, Ind., demolishing a car, knocking out windows, and damaging a restaurant. ! The unpredictable spring weather meanwhile, clamped a. cold wave on the snow-covered northern plains and Cheyenne, Wyo., which was isolated by a blizzard Tuesday, shivered in 11-' degrees temperatures Wednes day. 1 HIROSHIMA SURVIVOR ABILENE, Kan.
