We have been considering prayer as the outreach of man's spirit to God and man. We come now to consider growth in social consciousness. The question of expanded social con sciousness can best be raised by the ques tion "Who is my neighbor?" This question was asked by a lawyer when Jesus ap proved of his answer that one must love God totally, and "Also your neighbor as yourself." The Jews had defined the "neigh bor" as a Jew. That clipped the wings of this command so it could not fly beyond the Jowish fence. Jesus sent His command (oaring when He defined the neighbor as a man of another race in need. In other words, everybody is your neighbor liter ally everybody. Growth, then, is a growth In our con ception of "Who is my neighbor?" And an appreciation of and care for that neighbor. And' this is scientifically sound. For basically humanity is one, modified slight ly by local evlronment and customs. A Westerner who has spent his life among the Japanese people arid has made their life his own says: "There is no such thing as Japanese psychology it is just human psychology." They are the-6ame basically as other people modified by a Japanese past and present culture. The brain of hu manity is .one. We have set up a psychiatric center in Lucknow, India, and our psychi atrists there report that the basic mental and emotional problems are the same as those in the West, caused by slightly differ ing evironmental conditions. This is most important. It shows a basic humanity, one and the same. Sunday at 7:30 p.m. he will be painting with oils the beautiful picture, "Winter Wonderland" with light ing effects and background. The picture will blend with the pas tors sermon for that night, which is: "The Power of the Blood of the Lamb." This picture will be given to the family with the larg est attendance that night. There will be special music from the choir and members of the con gregation. At 11:00 a.m. the Rev. Leo M, Thornton, pastor, will conduct the Communion Service for this quar ter. It is to be known as the Semper Fidelis" (Always Faith- Baha'i Talk Saturday Eve Florence Mayberry, short story writer and president of the Santa Paula Calif. Business and Profes sional Women' Club, and mem ber of the Board of Directors of the Campfire Girls, will speak In Eugene Saturday, Jan. 2$, 8 p. m., at 1458 Alder St., home of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Jackson, under auspices of the local Baha'i Com munity. Her subject will be "The World's Greatest Force", a dis sertation on the Baha'i World Faith. She will also answer ques tions at conclusion of the talk. The public Is welcome. Mrs. Mayberry, a member of Baha'i, makes many radio and TV appearances on the subject. Recently she spoke before the University of Washington general student body, and to the Foreign Student Exchange there. From here she goes So Corvallis, to speak. Gordon Jackson, Baha'i World Faith teacher, who recently called for persona interested in Baha'i to meet, announces that a group has been formed to study Baha'i teachings, meeting each Wednes day at 7:30 p. m. until about 9, at bis home, 1438 Alder St. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, both stu dents at the University of Oregon, came here from California, where he became a member of Baha'i about I960, and has been study ing ever since. The seat of the Baha'i faith is in Haifa, Israel, and it now claims believers in 57 countries, totaling j it teaches that all the major re Business Meeting Central Lutheran Dedicates Sunday The first worship service in the new Central Luther an Church will be at 11 a.m. this Sunday morning. Pastor Harold Aalbue will preach on the topic "Holy Ground!" There will be a service of confirmation for several adults at this worship hour. The worship will begin with the deacons of the church bringing in the pulpit Bible and the sacramental vessels. The Right Reverend H. L. Foss of Seattle, Wash, will preach at the 4, p.m. sen-ice of dedication. Assisting in the service will be the fol lowing clergymen: Pastor Lowell Holte of Salem. Pas tor M. K. Nesse of Lebanon, Pastor Arnold Nelson of Sil verton. Pastor J. C. Carlson at Woodbum, Pastor Joseph Luthro of Sil verton. Pastor Oliver Everett of Sweet home. Pastor Waldo Ellick son of Albany, and Pastors B. T. Gabrielsonn and Orviile Kleppe of Eugene. The rite of Dedication will be a new one which will be a part of the new all-Lutheran com mon service book to be pub lished later this year. There will be a fellow ship hour after the Dedica tion with refreshments serv ed by the women of the church to all guests and friends attending the worship. Youth Week Takes Over At Churches in Springfield By VERA HANSEN First Baptist Has Singers From Radio A. concert of sacred music will be presented at First Baptist Church Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m. Featured artists are' Rudy At- wood, pianist, and John Lund- berg, tenor soloist, both of the Old Fashioned Revival Hour broadcast, heard locally each Sunday over Station KUGN. The program is under the spon sorship of the Women's Auxiliary of Westmont College, Santa Bar bara, Calif., of which Atwood is head of the piano department and Lundberg is acting chairman of the Division of r me Arts. Ad' mission is free. This Sunday morning a special offering will be received for the new bus purchased for the exten- sion work of the Sunday School. More than 60 children are trans ported from distant areas, yet unchurched, each Sunday. First Christian Asks Books For Orient The young people of the First Christian Church will have charge of the morning service, Sunday, Jan. 30, the beginning Sunday of Youth Week. The sche dule for the week includes: Sunday, Jan. 30 10:50 A.M. High School and Junior Hieh youth in charge of the morning worsnip. s:30 P.M. The High School group will meet with the Presbyterian and Methodist youth for dinner,, recreation and devotions. Saturday, Feb. 5. the youth will collect books to be sent to Africa, Japan and Malaya. Children's books, textbooks, encyclopedias, dictionaries, science, mathemat ics, history, religion, standard novels ... but mostly Bibles, can be used. Books should be re cent enough to be in current use and science books should be pub lished after 1940. If anyone in Eugene has books he would like to contribute to this cause, please call the office of First Christian Church for pick-up service.
