SHIRTS Eucena 'ROUND THE STATE Hopes Dim For Salvaging Historic Battleship Oregon PORTLAND m The attempt to keep the old battleship Oregon from the hands of junk dealers apparently is hopeless, the chair man of the state s BatuesBip Oregon Commission said Wednesday. Harry E. Williams, the chairman back from a conference with Navy officials in Washington, D. C, said Oregon has until Jan, 23 to apply for the old hulk, but the cost of towing it from Guam and restoring it as a memorial is excessive. He said the officials told him the hulk no longer is afloat. Taken to Guam to serve as a barge, the old ship now is aground and partly buried in sand. The Navy does not even plan to go to the cost of refloating the barge and tow ing it out for an "honorable bur ial" at sea, he said. He indicated the Navy would offer it for sale to scrap dealers. Liquor Sales Soar PORTLAND fcfl Oregonians saw the old year out by buyirtgl a record $6,016,358 worth of liquor in December. That one-month high, however, was not enough to overcome the declining trend of previous months, and sales for the six- month period ending Dec. 31 were 1.9 per cent below tho same period of 1953, the State 'Liquor Control Commission reported, Sales in tho six-month period totaled $23,703,391. aae Doors Open at 12:45 Ends Saturday "THE presented by Warner Bros. u "WARNERCOLOR J $DD Mm TONY V7f 2860 WILLAMETTE 73b4.4IS2 klWr.lsBiMifcliM.ll , , Doors Open at 6:45 ': The Ond Picture Everybody' Wants io See Again and Again!
