This attitude, enhancing the value of the individual man, led America to invest in the develop ment of the minds of men, and to give careful attention to this effort. A university, Dr. Wilson said, functions in accordance with that special aspect of the American way of life. And, he concluded. it isn't difficult to believe that no American business of today could succeed without the influ ence of universities which train the minds of men and women who take part, directly or indi rectly, in business affairs. Following his election as Cham ber president, Gragg took a note from Rodway s final message from that office to the member ship. Rodway had just mentioned that the Chamber continues to face more problems than it was able to solve during his tenure. Gragg observed that a growing community will continue to en counter many problems but that he fully expects the Chamber to "work toget.her in efforts to re solve them. PRESSING PROBLEMS Rodway singled out for special mention problems ot parking and transportation. "You don't de cide these by putting them off," he noted. Noting there now are five cars for every four that were here in 1950, Rodway emphasized that these problems can only be come aggravated with passage of time. He also mentioned the de veloping inadequacy of Eugene's Mahlon Sweet Airport. Fifteen years ago, this was one of the Northwest's largest air fields, he said, but now it is apparent that it is not the final answer lo Eu gene's air Iransportation prob lem. EYVEB PRAISED Attention to the progress ot the Eugene Water & Electric Board also was called for by Rodway in his curtain talk. He lauded the municipal utilities operation and suggested vigilance against efforts to obstruct its further development. Included in a number of busi ness reports presented at the meeting was out-going Treasurer Fred Brunner's financial recap on Chamber operations through the past year. The Chamber now has a $10,000 reserve fund in U. S. saving bonds, Brunner said, and its income for 1954 compares fa vorably with that of the previous year. Brunner gave special credit to the Chamber's membership committee which signed 246 new member firms during the year. 0. R. Archbishop Lays Chapel Cornerstone PORTLAND 1 The Most Rev. Edward D. Howard, archbishop of the Portland Roman Catholic Archdiocese, Sunday laid the cor nerstone for a chapel at the Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother grotto here. The chapel, which is to be completed in 1955, is being built under sponsorship of the Servite Fathers. Jail Checked (Continued from Page One) ods. Elder's request for a "fact finding" investigation of the city jail came Monday morning at the same time that Chief Brown was holding a command meeting which resulted in the firing of three jailers for the Friday night escape of two county prisoners who still are at large. Released were three proba tionary patrolmen who had been assigned to the jail. They are William Clements, Lcroy Prink and Ed Phillips. The department's command of ficers found that the men had been negligent in not double locking the doors and making periodic "head-checks ' as quired by jail rules. City Mana ger linlayson approved the dis missals. The escapees Richard Henry Jarvis and Eugene Godfrey Mc Intyre went through three doors using a spoon to move the latches sometime Friday night. Their dis appearance was not discovered until Saturday afternoon. Three new men were hired Tuesday morning. Thev are Don ald McKay, 26, W. C. Hutcheson Jr., 24, and Richard Plane, 25. The city cares for county pri soners under a contract agree ment. Elder said that because of this he feels a responsibility for plugging the "leaks ' at the faci lity. The county commissioners Tuesday were seeking to get all concerned parties together to consider Elder s suggestion. Roseburg Trial Opens PORTLAND Wl The trial of foreclosure suits against Rose burg Homes, Inc., opened in fed eral court here Monday. The suits, involving 79 of 180 homes built by the firm in the Roseburg area, total more than $500,000.
