Higher Salaries Proposed
For Beginning Teachers
Portland nn Hicher beeinnine salaries for Oregon teachers
have been recommended by the economic welfare committee of the
Oregon Education Assn.
The committee also recommended that a school board be re
quired to put in writing its reasons for not rehiring a teacher or
administrator.
The recommendations, if approved by the OEA's representative
council in December, would become official policy of the organiza
tion and would be presented to the Oregon legislature next spring
for possible action.
The committee asked that minimum salaries for teachers with
less than three years experience be raised from $1,800 to $3,400
annually. Salaries would be rais

Budget Boost Asked
SALEM Wl The State Board
of Education wants to increase
its spending for vocational edu
cation by 14.7 per cent in the
next two years. The budget for
this purpose would total $1,038,-

However, it first must be ap
proved by the Budget Depart
ment and the Legislature.
The board said it needs more
money because the federal gov
ernment demands employment
of more supervisors, and because
the government is reducing its
share of the costs.
