Boone, who thinks he just might.be kin to the legendary Kentucky Woodsman, Daniel, took over as 38th superin tendent of the Naval Academy Ihursday. The 56-year-old Boone, who graduated from the Navy school 34 years ago, succeeded Kear. Adm. Charles A. Buchanan, who has held temporary command since Vice Adm. C. Turner Joy retired July 1. Buchanan reverted to his capacity as commandant of midshipmen. Boone came to Annapolis from two years duty as naval member o the Strategic Survey Commit tee, principal advisory commit tee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. 'BEST OF THE BADMEN" CinemaScope Not His Dish Director Doubts Big Screen's Value Ry ALINE MOSRY or The United Press HOLLYWOOD (IP) Cinema Scope epics are hailed as the sa vior of the movie industry, but director Elia Kazan said this week he doesn't like the wide screen process and "I don't think it will last long." The 'most controversial feature of Hollywood's wide-screen revo lution is how some drama, be sides medieval spectacles and westerns, can be portrayed ef fectively on the gigantic screens. Kazan currently is making his first CinemaScope movie for Warner studio, "East of Eden," an intimate drama. And he fearlessly admitted "I'm not en thusiastic about CinemaScope." PREDICTS SHORT STAY "Warner won't like this, '. guess, but I think Fox studio (creators of CinemaScope) is off on the wrong foot," said the di rector, respected in the film in dustry for his honesty. I don t think it will last long. Kazan said he prefers a screen ratio of 1.85 to 1, which is slight ly wider than the conventional screen. He recently released "On the Waterfront," an exciting picture and one of the year s best, wa filmed in the conventional size in good, old-fashioned black and white. Many other top pictures of 1954 "Country Girl," "Sa brina," "Rear Window" and Caine Mutiny" also were shot in the ordinary size. STUDIO PREFERRED IT Kazan said he wasn't forced to do "East of Eden" in Cinema Scope, but the studio "preferred" that he did. 'I think I've treated Cinema Scope a little differently in this picture, the director said. 1 did not use it the way they ve been using it. I don't think you will have the feeling of that big screen. 'For one scene I tilted the camera sideways. For another the screen is blacked out except for a slit that you see through anything to break up that mail box slot size of CinemaScope. Actually I -tried to shoot most of the picture iust as I would for the conventional screen. GOOD FOR LETTUCE "We've got lettuce fields In this picture," he grinned. "Cine maScope is good for that." Kazan admitted CinemaScope has brought new prosperity to the movies. But I think that s too bad not that Fox studio made money from it, but that It was because of a technical reason," ha said.
