Twenly Qualify At Drain Meet By DICK STRITE KeclsteGilard Sports Kditor DRAIN Thirteen local swim mers and divers and three each from Cottage Grove and one from Yoncalla will give the southern end of the Emerald Empire for midable representation at the Register-Guard's all-area cham pionships at Springfield next Thursday night. The Drain-Grove district meet was held here Thursday after noon with slightly more interest and increased prowess. The addi tion of the Cottage Grove contin gent aided in making the meet successful and the Gravers may have the opportunity of staging the district meet next year in their own pool. Plans for the pool, I to be constructed in time for use next spring, will be discussed later this week. Best individual performance here Thursday was by Janice Mattoon, a perennial title threat who won four first places in the 13-14 year division. There was also a triple winner for Drain, Larry Brown in the 1516 division, and three double winners Bob Henderson and Del Dungey, both 11-12, and Jill Evans, 15-16. Kath ie Wood of Yoncalla was also a double winner. Cottage Grove had two triple winners Bonnie Simonnelte in the 11-12 division and Stan Harris in the 13-14 year division. All first-place winners here Thursday will qualify for the championship meet at the Wil lamette pool in Springfield, start ing promptly at 7 p.m. VFW Team To Face Rubes Springfield VFW and Eugene's chamnion Rubes meet at 8 n.m. Saturday on the Washington Parktl diamond for the District 6 soft ball championship. Winner will face Brookmead Dairy of Coos Bay, winner of the District 7 title with a 3-2 victory Wednesday over Youngs Bay Lumber of Roseburg, for a berth in the state tournament starting August 21 at Bend. The best-of-three series next week is tenta tively slated for Washington rark. Springfield VFW will face the Rubes, runnerup in last year's state tourney but an also-ran in a recent invitational tourney at Corvallis, after whipping Oak- ridge, 6-1, in the opening game of the single elimination district playoffs. Bob Johnson will he starting hurler for Springfield's cham pions, who will face Bob Willis of the Rubes. Jim Grant and AVade Cowan have led Springfield's hitting, while Bill Hutchinson, Charlie Mickelson and Tom Collie have been the sluggers for the Rubes, who will be without Manager Dale Warbcrg due to a dislocated shoulder.
