Dead Uncounted In Wake of Flood PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Mexico Iffi This was a town of aorrow and uncounted dead Wednesday night. The greatest flood in the history of the Rio Grande rolled down on Piedras Negras and past the levee that curled around it like a protecting arm. Thirty-eight persons are known dead. But few believed these were all the dead. Unconfirmed estimates ranged up to 500. Wednesday night campfires flickered on the rough, mas-quite-covered hills around what was a thriving farm town of 35,000 people across the Rio Grande from Eagle Pass, Tex. These were the fires of the homeless, people who daily I trudge back to their ruined Eagi Ex-President rer to Go Back to Work KANSAS CITY, Mo. nn For mer President Harry S. Truman hankered to get back to work and made political wisecracks as his doctors reported "substantial progress" in his fight to recover his health. Doctors attending Mr. Truimn were frankly optimistic about his chances to shake off the effects of a double operation June 19 Dr. Wallace Graham, chief physician attending Truman, said Wednesday night the attending doctors felt ' much better about the former president. He added, however, that they were "still concerned." Mrs. Bess Truman, once first lady of the land, told newsmen her husband was "very much bet ter." Mrs. Truman spent her visiting hours reading to the restless pa tient. She brought a wisecrack from him with a news report thai 2,000 Baptists in Moscow had said prayers for Truman. The ex-prcsident grinned "that (hould get a certain senator go ing again." Mrs. Truman and doctors of fered no further explanation of the remark, but it apparently roj ferred to Sen. Joseph R. Mc Carthy (R-Wis). Truman began to show impa tience and irritation. He said he wanted to get back to work on his memoirs and re sume his famous custom of taking long walks when most people arc Kill in bed. However, Dr. Graham gave an "informed guess" that Truman probably won't get out of Re houses in search of the dead At least one half the half farthest from the river of Pied ras Negras still is flooded. The downtown section was in better shape. It is high, on the edge of the Rio Grande, and the water has receded from its white brick two-story buildings with spires and shutters of red and blue Cars move through the paved downtown streets and merchants sadly take up the job of getting back to ruined businesses. PAVING PLAYS OUT Away from the business sec tion, the paving plays out and the streets are loblollies of sticky mud down which no automobile can travel. These are the sections where adobe houses melted like toy mud huts made by children. Open ccsspols pock the town like sores. There is no pure wa ter in the town. H. G. Walker, a U. S. Pub lic Health Service officer from Eagle Pass who has inspected Piedras Negras, said, "Sanitary conditions are horrible. The wa ter system was never adequate and now there is none at all." At first, Walker said, bodies were pulled nut of mcsquite bushes and buried quickly. "But listen," he said, "there arc five or six kids in every Mex ican family. Those families lake care of their own. They find a drowned kid and they bury him pronto." "So who knows how many are dead. From what I hear, there may be anywhere, from 200 to 500. But I don't know if that's right and nobody will ever know. But I'll bet there are a hell of a lot of bodies uncounted." Robert Oppenheimer said Wed nesday "I don't dismiss" the possibility of appealing to Pres ident Eisenhower the Atomic En ergy Commission's decision bar ring him access to secret atomic data. The atomic pioneer said ho was surprised by the President's itatement that he would he lis-j tened to if he decided to appeal, ind added that the idea "never occurred to me." In a telephone interview, Op penheimer said his present plans are to continue research in fun-! damcntal physics although it will be "a nuisance" not having clear ance to many laboratories. There are many private Insti tutions, Oppenheimer said, at I which experiments are being' conducted for the government and where he is "not welcome"1 My longer. The AEC declared that Oppen heimer, once one of its most trusted advisers, is unfit to handle America's atomic secrets because of "defects of character . . . and dangerous associations." Its majority report said the ques tion of his loyalty was not : issue. Oppenheimer said he has no Intention of resigning as direc tor of tho Institute for Advanced Study here. 1,100, was lost.
