Gilmore, hired by a group of local architects to coordinate plans for a proposed city-county civic center in Eugene, has been focusing attention on tne county building during recent weeks. He said Thursday that local architects have been working out individual ideas for locating a new county building somewhere near the present courthouse, but that it may be two or three weeks before all are agreed on a joint plan. Gilmore added that planning for the civic center, as such, is going ahead, but the architects are now down to individual prob lems. He said each of the projects city library, county building, city Duuaing, state and federal structures and the cultural center will be studied one at a time in an attempt to coordinate them with the remainder of the downtown civic center plan. The class will be held Monday, June 14, at 10 a.m. and there will be a potluck noon lunch. All in terested persons are invited. Mrs. George Dyer of Veneta will be instructor. Lessons will be free, and material for making corsages will be for sale. Persons attending are asked to bring their own scissors, pencil and paper, wire cutters, table service, and potluck dish. Snake Alarm ATLANTA (IP) The frightened telephone call from children at the T. C. Sasser home while their parents were away was convinc ing enough to -bring Patrolman D. T. The group of architects are still meeting periodically as they have from the beginning last fall, to work on the voluntary project. EXPLAINED PROGRAM Several members of the South west Oregon Chapter of the American Institute of Architects who have been devoting time to the civic center idea, have re cently explained the program to groups outside Eugene Gilmore said he and others travelled to Portland several weeks ago to discuss the matter with the Portland chapter of the AIA. They have also showed plans to the Willakenzie Grange, the Eugene Realty Board and the Springfield Realty Board. The architects have already met with the Eugene City Council, the Eugene Planning Commission and others. Protection Rate Cut Requested District Objects To Proposed Levy Representatives of the Rain bow Water and Fire Protection District Friday asked Springfield city officials for a cut in the pro posed rate for city-furnished fire protection during the coming fis cal year. The city has budgeted an esti mated figure of $6,000 based on the 4,2-mill levy which a con tract between the two agencies calls for as the amount it will collect from the Rainbow District during the coming year. This amounts to an increase of about $1,500 over the current rate since the assessed valuation of the district has increased by $236,000 since last year. Rainbow board members and their attorney, Donald Husband, met informally Friday afternoon with Springfield City Manager L. B. Bartlett, Mayor Edward C. Harms Jr., Fire Chief Harry Krieger, and Couneilmen Paris Breedlove and Ralph Nichols to protest the proposed hike in rates. During the fiscal year which ends June 30, the Springfield De partment has made 22 runs so far in answer to Rainbow District alarms. The two groups agreed to con sider a proposed 4-mill rate, which will figure out at about $5,000, as a compromise. That proposal will be considered by the full city council Monday night and by the full board of directors of the Rainbow District.
