The foundation, a component of the Illinois Institute of Tech nology, said it used more than 100 times as much radioactivity in 1953 as It did in 1951. Dr. Leonard Reiffel, supervisor of nuclear physics, said rapid strides have been made in mak ing radioisotopes available for research. Radioisotopes are various ele ments which have been made ra dioactive by exposure to nuclear radiation from an atomic reactor, from an "accelerator" such as cy clotron, or from a portable ra diation source. Radioisotopes are used by Armour Research Foundation, he said, to help solve problems in ore separation, muscle composi tion analysis, wear studies of tur bine blades, direct generation of electrical energy, soil permeabil ity and automatic machine con trol. . . By employing a closed circuit, registration clerks and school of ficials could see immediately which classes were closed, which had space and just how many students the classes could hold School authorities reported that in previous registrations, students went through the tedious process of filling out cards and in man cases learned by mail the classes were full. This necessitated sub stituting of classes, dropping of others and much unnecessary pa per work. In the new way, a camera is fo cused on a bulletin board in the library where class enrollments are tallied and flashed to TV screens in other rooms where the students fill out their programs. The college also uses closed cir cuit TV in classroom work where one instructor can give a visual lecture-demonstration to several rooms at the same time.
