Two Mathematics Sessions Set for U O Summer Term Two summer conferences, one tor college teachers of mathemat- es and one for teachers if sec ies and one for teachers if sec- be held on the University of Ore gon campus during the 1954 sum mer session. The first of these conferences, sponsored and financed by the National Science Foundation, will bring teachers of college mathe matics into close contact wilh mathematical trends and develop ments. Dr. Ivan Niven. profes sor of mathematics at the Uni versity, is director of the confer ence. The second conference, for high school teachers, is sponsored by the Fund for the Advancement of. Education. Dr. A. F. Mour- sund, head of Ihe university mathematics department, is di rector. To implement the exchange of ideas between college and high school teachers a cooperative seminar has been planned, with Dr. K. S. Ghent, associate profes sor at the university, as coordin ator. , Som of (he seminar topics are: trend toward teaching in college basic mathematics courses; mathe matical preparation at elementary and advanced level for work in the social sciences; mechanical and electronic calculators and the impact of numerical methods on mathematics, and the place of mathematics in general educa tion. Membership In the conference is open to all interested. A lim ited number of grants are being awarded. Membership in the high school mathematics conference will be limited to 60. Some grants will be given for this session also, Offered during the eight-week session wilt be a workshop in sec ondary school mathematics, in struction in elementary and in termediate college mathematics, and special mathematics courses for teachers, as well as other ad vanced work. Both conferences will be held from .Tune 21 through August 13.
