Buy one Use Christmas Soils Police Arrest Youth On Disorderly Charge Terry Wayland Gaither, 21, who told police he lives at the Delta Upsilon fraternity on the University of Oregon campus, was arrested at 7th and Van Bu ren St. about 1:45 a.m. Tuesday on a disorderly conduct charrje alter the proprietor of a nearby motel told police Gaither slam med a door on his fingers. A Eugene policeman reported Gaither was walking along W. 7lh Ave. when he made the ar rest. Later, the motel proprietor said Gaither was the same per son who had asked to use the telephone, and when he was re fused slammed the door on the owner's hand. Gaither was fined $25 in Mu nicipal Court Tuesday morning and released. FIRE DESTROYS VEHICLES BURNS OPi Four cars and truck beds were destroyed and the Ben-Portland truck line head quarters here damaged beyond repair in a fire Sunday. Loss was estimated at $30,000. A study of the disappearing hill languages of Burma will be the research project of Dr. Theodore Stern, assistant professor of an thropology In the University of Oregon, under a grant awarded by the Fulbright Foundation. Dr. Stern, under conditions of the award, will work directly un der the University of Rangoon. He will do work that will fit in closely with the university pro gram he has been carrying on in Oregon. Here he has engaged in a study of Indian languages of the the stale, particularly the Kla math. He teaches linguistics and a course on the people and cul tures of Southeastern Asia. The field of research he will ingage in in Burma is outlined by the Rangoon institution, which states: "The University wishes to in augurate research in the languag es of the various Hill peoples of Burma , , , The Rector of the Unl verslty comments that 'Burma with Its many Hill tribes and races," has a number of lan guages still spoken besides the common and official languages of Burmese. A comparison of the ism and 1031 Burmese Census Reports showed that in the inter vening ten years, many languages have disappeared or are rapidly desappcaring. This, it is urgently necessary tor the remaining lan guages to be studied before they disappear forever." Dr. Sterns assignment will take place during the coming academic year. He will spend ap proximately nine months in Bur ma.
