Jimmy Stewart
June Allyson
Click as Pair
HOLLYWOOD (in Jimmy
Stewart and June Allyson, a team
as American and homey as flap
jacks and syrup, soon will be
decorating the nation's movie
screens.
Tony Mann, who has directed
the gangling actor in six pictures,
says Stewart and Allyson are a
kind of Lunt-Fontanne pair that
click together. Mann should
know, for he directed the stars
in "The Glenn Miller Story" and
currently rs engaged in putting
them through their paces for
Strategic Air Command."
"Jimmy and June first teamed
up in 1949 for 'The Stratton
Story,' " Mann said, "and every
body thought they were naturals'
to play man an wife on the
screen. I guess it's sort of a chem
ical combinatiorK-they go to
gether.
"It wouldn't surprise me at all
if they were to become the most
famous team of the future," he
added. "Of course, they're a dif
ferent kind of team not the old
time torried couple o the twen
ties like John Gilbert and Greta
Garbo, ut a wholesome, relaxed
married couple."
The director explained the
stars don't seem to be acting
when they work together. Their
timing and acting abilities, com
bined with their talent for work
ing together, make for happy
picture making.
Too, both stars have tremen-;
dous individual followings and
their combined boxoffice draw
should be second to none. .
"Jimmy and June are really at
case witn one another and give
enough time and thought to con
tribute things to a picture that
help make the story believable,"
Mann continued. "And between
takes they talk things over like a
couple of real professionals."

give pleasure long after Christ

and book stores.
Newest attractions on wax in
clude big names in the music and
entertainment business. "Christ

Christmas favorites, done by "Big
A," and all the little "Gs" in
cluding (and is the master's face

The records were made just be

MILLER ALBUM
Tho new Glenn Miller memo
rial album, is a beautiful re-issue
of 70 popular classics the famed
orchestra leader recorded before
he disappeared on a flight from
London to Pans just nine years
ago. It's available either in LP
or 45 rpm.
The Welch Chorale has pressed
a fine album of carols, one of the
many in the Eugene and Spring
field shops which also feature
record players at low prices.
Then, there's the most peren
nial favorite, "White Christmas"
by Bing Crosby, with "Rudolf, the
Red-Nosed Reindeer" on the
other side. The controversial
Libcrace has a new group out
this year, starring himself and
featuring his brother's orchestra.
For humor, there's a new Mel
Blanc recording, "Yah, Das 1st
Ein Christmas Tree," one one
side, and "I Tan't Wait til Quith
muth Day," and Jimmie Boyd's
"I Saw Mama Kissing Santa
Claus."
NON-FICTION POPULAR
In the book shops, non-fiction
is preferred, with a continuing
trend toward books on philoso
phy, religion, history and biog
raphy. Oregon authors are fea
tured prominently this year:
Stewart Holbrook's "Age of
Moguls," a best-seller; Lucia
Moore's "The Wheel and the
Hearth,", and Olive Barber's "The
Lady and the Lumberjack," which
is being made into a movie.
For children, the bird, dog and
animal stamp books are favorites,
which not only are fascinating,
but educational. Colored pictures,
in the form of stamps, are in the
front of the book, to be cut out
and pasted with stories about the
animal or bird, elsewhere in the
book.
Christmas cards seem to get
more attractive year by year,
with the trend away from verses
or sayings. However, Santa Claus
and the Christmas tree still are
the favorites, which would seem
to indicate that the "old time"
Christmas spirit is not obsolete,
after all.
