OP 'EM- HEROES NC-tMNS BUT 'SLEEVES- C&SfW CeiklT Tr.Ku U.'f Motto Changed Preacher's Life By GEORGE W. CORNELL Associated Press Staff Writer LAREDO, Tex. Ifl A husky American with blond, crew-cut hair walked along the dusty street, leading a small Mexican boy. Both were blind. As they walked, they sang light-heartedly: "Yo quiern trabajar por el se nor . . ," The words mean "I want to be a worker for the Lord . . .." Many times they had sung the lively sone by themselves or with others who were blind, gathered in a little cement-block chapel on the north edge of town. Then the gay-spirited American would take his racing fingers from the piano keyboard, or lay aside his accordion, and open the big braille Bible. "Porque de lal manera amodios el mundo . . ," he would intone, is his fingers traced the words. "For God so loved the world , . ." DARK WORLD LIT Then they would sing some more' their dark world lit by music and another kind of vision. "Oh my, how we sing!" said the American, whose name is Claire Hobart. 'You should hear them. At night, they have their guitars and come serenading. It's just, wonderful." Society Has Clothing Drive JUNCTION CITY St. Anne's Society is sponsoring a Thanks giving clothing drive. The clothes are to be left with Mrs. William 'Brockamp, 777 Laurel St., from where they will be shipped to Se attle and from there overseas. President Mrs. Lloyd Keck ask d that anyone contact her who could donate blood to replace that given to Mrs. Anna Callahan af ter her recent operation. The Junction City Society will clean and decorate Our Lady of Victory church at, Harrisburg from De cember through March and the following women were named to serve: Mrs. Ralph Witchcr and Mrs. Ben Kokkeler, December Mrs. Fred Petersen and Mrs. Thomas Fclzcr, January; Mrs. John Sanford and Mrs. Pat Idle wine, February. March commit tees will be announced later. The next meeting will be held with Mrs. Lee Murphy on Dec 10. Assisting her will bo Mrs Wm. Brockamp and Mrs. John Conscr. This will be the annual Christmas party with the usual SO cent gift exchange. Election of officers will also lake place and the past presidents of the organi zation were named to the nomi nating committee. CG Chest Campaign At Halfway Mark COTTAGE GROVE A report on the Community Chest drive shows Cottage Grove just a shade short of the halfway mark. H. B. Monighan, assistant chairman, says to date $4,580.22 has been collected locally as compared to the $9,500 goal. The campaign will come to a close Tuesday, Nov. 24, with a recognition banquet held in Eu gene for the Lane County work ers. Some follow-up work will continue after the drive official ly closes in which donations from pledgers who may have been away during the drive, or for some other reason are late with their contribution, will still be accepted. In this border town along the muddy Rio Grande, Hobart, 39, and his wife, Norma, run the little Latin American Lutheran Mission, helping blind Mexicans learn to read, to work and to worship. It. is a strange, stirring life the blind musician and his wife have built here. "When, you see the struggle these people have to live and know they need you," Hobart said, "then you want to be with them and love them. And you see they love you, too. That's everything!" No denomination finances the work. It's a "faith" mission, kept going by occasional outside dona tions and the short, church concert tour Hobart makes each year singing and playing the organ, piano and accordion. TINY HOUSE He and Norma, both college educated, live in a tiny house, which until this year had no run ning water or indoor toilet. They 've had lean times. It took four years to build the little chapel. "We've got nothing," Hobart grinned, "but happiness." They sing as they go bouncing over the international bridge in their old car, with Norma at the wheel since she can see. The car piled with clothes for needy across the border. The guards, who are supposed to stop any car. goes that might be sold, wink and look the other way. "Viva Mexico!" says Hobart, "Passe!" says the guard. The schedule is an arduous one for Hobart, who came from Tay lors Falls and Willmar, Minn., and his wife, the former Norma Lien of Lake Mills, Iowa. Any rewards are the intangible kind. But out of some extraordinary perspective, perhaps through Ho- ban s blindness, they have found values which scorn the usual goals of social life, bank counts, property and prominence. "It's just, a lot of joy," says Hobart. "Each man has to find what's good in life from his own vantage point. I can't, see but can know, for myself, 'the love of Christ constraineth me. " INDUSTRIAL CLASSES On weekdays, there arc indus trial classes for blind Mexican men and women, learning to make baskets, tables, brushes and fold ing cols. Once they had no means of livelihood. "Bueno . . , good," says Hob art, as he inspects the work with expert hands. "Muy men. There are educational classes for young and old, on history, civics, reading, geography, arith metic. Both Hobart and Norma teach. So do advanced students, like .lose Carillo, 36, the mission's first blind pupil five years ago. And Lllia Hernandez, 3ft. And Alejandro Reyna, 25, who wants to be a missionary, too. We're going to look at Jesus someday," said Eloy. "The blind will see Him." On Sundays and Wednesday evenings, Norma uses the car to bring worshippers to services, carload by carload. Few can af ford a bus. "We have a secret," Hobart says gleefully. "Spanish will be the language of heaven. Its so beautiful." When a student learns to read a full chapter of the Bible, he is given a Spanish Bible in braille, It was such a Spanish Bible, which Hobart happened on in a library in Kansas City while there for a concert, that first turned him from a musical career to missionary work. IDEA FROM MOTTO Blind since infancy, Hobart thinks the idea originally may have been planted in his mind by an embossed motto that hung on will direct thy path." Other parts of the Bible had a lot to do with it, too, he said. He is particularly fond of the last three chapters of Revela tion, describing heaven and say ing at one point: "And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle. the wall of his boyhood home in!nelther iight of the sun. or the Taylors Falls. It said: "Commit thy way unto the Lord. Trust also in Him and He Lord God giveth them light: And they shall reign forever and ever."
