It was Le- kenta's 15-yard field goal with only two seconds showing on the big clock which enabled the highly rated Spartans to eke out a Frank ' Merriwell-and-then-some 17-14 vic tory over Oregon State's battling Beavers before a crowd of 22,585. But for an offside penalty with seven seconds remaining, Michi gan State's green shirted club would have had to settle for a 14 14 tie. With seven seconds to play Lekenta tried a field goal from the 20-yard line but it went wide. The OSC infraction gave him a second try and the sophomore's toe was true on this one. STREAK PRESERVED The game ending horn sounded just as Lekenta's successful thump sailed through the uprights, so the Spartans were able to preserve a 17-game winning streak. But Kip Taylors "football for fun crew proved anything but funny to the touted Spartans. Michigan State launched its pay off drive from the Spartan 33 with 3:01 to play. Quarterback Tom Yewcic launched the three-point surge by hitting end Paul Dekker for 13 yards after a no gain thrust and an incomplete pass. Yewcic unwound again this time to full back Evan Slonac for 24 more and a first down on the Beaver 30. A Yewcic-to-Leroy Bolden screen pass picked up three but a delay- of-the-game infraction moved the ball back to the 32. Yewcic then ran a bootleg around his own right end and out-of-bounds to stop the clock with 45 seconds showing. , An incomplete pass brought up fourth and seven but Yewcic's arm was deadly again when he connect ed with Dekker down the middle to the OSC 14. After an incom plete throw, Lekenta came in for his two field goal tries which put the finishing touches on the con test. Early in this same fourth quar ter the aroused Spartans un- . leashed another drive which was halted on the Beaver nine this time with 4:33 left Slonac, the extra-point kicker tried a field goal. His attempt from the 15 and slightly to the left went wide but the Oregon Staters failed to gain with the Spartans following up the punt for the final flourish..
