Bush Pilot Comes to Visit Fall Creek By Mrs. JOHN SIMMONS KjUtfr-iuard Correspondent FALL CREEK Interesting vis itors expected at Fall Creek soon are Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Winchell and daughter, Pat, who will be visiting at the Smith-Hopfe home. Oscar is a brother to Leonard Win chell, who makes his home with the Smiths, and a nephew of Mr. Smith. Winchell, a modest man, with a story to tell, if he would tell it, and he won't, so we will, is one of the original "Bush Pilots" of Alaska. They are known as bush pilots, not because they flit from bush to bush, nor because they are high stepping bush whackers, but because they fly without instru ments in a no-man's land and tackle the flying jobs that most avaiators won't look at. Mr. Winchell, of Anchorage, and originally from McGrath, Alaska, started working as a farm hand in Alaska twenty-six years ago to ob tain flying instruction and later, purchased his first plane, an old World War I "Jenny." He started carrying mail and passengers. It gradually developed into carrying freight, and flying mercy and res cue missions. He laugh about Ihe time that he transported a milk cow. And an other amusing flight was the time he took a box of books, for. one mining camp, and a box of phono-' graph records for another. You guessed it! The camp lhat was waiting for the books, got the pho nograph records, and no phono graph. The camp that was wait ing for ihe records, cot the hooks. Alice M. Mrs. Roosevelt Urges Press to Give 'Facts' WASHINGTON (IB Mrs, Eleanor Roosevelt urges that the nation's press provide an Impartial presen tation of facts so that the public can "think through the different sides of any question." Mrs. Roose velt issued her plea for a "forum of facts" in a speech Friday to the seventh national Conference on Citizenship.
