A newspaper is A CITIZEN OF ITS COMMUNITY. Entered at the Post Office at Eugene, Oregon, as second-class matter. PAGE 2 EUGENE, Adventure Among Shadows This is the season of baccalaureate ser mons and commencement addresses. Youth, emerging from its brief period of academic seclusion and draft deferment, girds itself for a world bristling with challenges. The young idea must now, in learn how to shoot. In such an atmosphere, unctuous plati tudes carry small conviction. That may ac count for the sober and almost gloomy note in some of the current addresses to grad uating classes. Yet there is vivid inspiration, too, in the call to surmount the failures and difficulties of today. One of the major purposes of education is to lift the gaze above the immediate present, to discover the riches of the past and the pos sibilities of the future. President A. Whit ney Griswold of Yale last week end deplored the failure of the American public to recog nize this fact. He cited as symptoms of the "siqkness" of American education the pres ent financial crisis, the teacher shortages, overcrowded and undisciplined schoolrooms, threats to academic freedom, "educational assets mortgaged to the entertainment in dustry," popular delusions "identifying high er learning with immorality and treason." At the same time, he added, American ed ucation has deep roots in values that trans cend the tensions of the moment. It is the function of the educated man to cherish these roots; to help his countrymen under stand "the difference between man the an imal and man the mind and soul; between the world with Shakespeare in it and the world with him left out." What can this mean to the young man called on to leave the school of liberal arts for the rougher school of mass slaughter? It can mean that he is challenged to carry into Have You Signed, Are you for or agin' legal legal gambling? Whichever is the case, Oregon must decide , this important question, so sig natures from those of both opinions serve the same pur pose, to get the question before the voters on the November ballot. Most churches are energeti cally circulating petitions this weekend to place a measure on (LurcL YJeu5 vLmmarij ( (ontinuedj , SALVATION ARMY UibiI rvleei. MKTnODIST 11 a.m.. Rev. Birrr Trover manager ( ludle station 21, 1952 the great, machinelike, collective enterprises of our day that faith in intelligence, that sense of the dignity and worth of the individ ual, that awareness of the spiritual resources of mankind that holds out hope for the tri umph of mental and moral power over brute force. Shakespeare put into the mouth of his would-be dictator, Julius Caeser, words known to almost every schoolboy: Let me have men about me that are fat; Sleek-headed men, and such a sleep 'o night: Yon Cassius has a lean and hungry look; He thinks too much: such men are dangerous. Today subversive plotters of the Cassius type are to be found in American society; but an equal or even greater danger may exist in the tendency to use this as an ex cuse to decry independent thought, to sus pect the man who "thinks too much," who rises too far above the average. Today's graduates have this subtler form of barbar ism to combat at home as well as the grosser, more aggressive forms abroad. Yet, as the students at New York Univer sity were reminded by the Rev. Dr. Louis Sunday, religion holds the ; answer insofar as it satisfies "not only the desire for safety but also the spirit of ad venture." Here religion and education join hands. What greater adventure today than the war of the free intelligence and the il lumined heart against soulless conformity and that materialism which reckons only in terms of its own security and its own ma terial methods? "adventurously and creatively toward the peace for which the whole world privilege and obligation of every young man and woman, who steps out among the shadows of today. We therefore urge everyone to sign immediately." All persons circulating peti tions are requested to deliver them to Epple by Monday, June 23, notarized, so that they can be checked by the county clerk and forwarded to the state headquarters in time to be de livered to the secretary of state's office before the July 3 deadline.
