P"rt'T PUBLIC RECORDS jig NO MORE DIRT NORTH BEND (U.PJ Eugene Brooks, 38, Reedsport, died in a hospital here Thursday from in juries suffered Wednesday in a truck accident on the Loon Lake road east of Reedsport. Brooks and William Conkev were riding in an empty lumber truck when the shoulder of the road gave way and toppled the truck down a steep slope. Conkey was pinned in the wreckage, but Brooks, who suf fered a crushed chest, climbed up the slope to the road and flagged down a passing truck. The truck took Brooks toward Reedsport where an ambulance met him. Conkey escaped with minor injuries. Eugene Resident Dies At Salem Hospital Ethel Wright of Salem, a resi dent of Eugene for many years, died Thursday night at a Salem hospital after becoming ill at a church meeting. She was 62. She was the daughter of Mrs. C. F. Heine and the sister of Lela Munker, both of Salem. ' No funeral date has been set pending the arrival of a relative from the East Coast. Sunday, commencement day, will open with the Flower and Fern Parade near the statue of the Pioneer Mother. Mrs. Janes is in charge of this annual event to which senior women and alum' nae have been invited. A full-dress academic proces sion will form for commencement exercises. A color guard, Presi dent Newburn and the platform party will lead off from Johnson Hall, marching toward McArthur Court, Following this group will be the faculty in full academic re galia, candidates for advanced de grees, and candidates for bache lors' degrees. COMMENCEMENT exercises will be at 2:30 p.m. in the court. George F. Chambers, Salem, will represent the state board of high er education. The commencement address will be delivered by the Rev. Robert J. MacCracken, pas tor of the Riverside Baptist Church in New York City. Students will get their diplo mas from President Newburn. More than 1,200 are expected to march across the McArthur Court stage to get the sheepskins and flip the tassels" on their mortar board caps. Municipal Poor Offers Adult Swimming Lessons Swimming lessons for adults will be offered this summer at Eugene's Memorial Pool. The contestants, according to Gene Cutts, chairman of the event, who must have either a license or learner's permit, will compete for an expense-paid trip to Portland in July. They may sign up for the contest with any J.C. or. register at the Githens Lincoln-Mercury Agency, site of the competition. Contestants must not have had a citation for any moving violation during the last six months. Drivers will compete in four new cars furnished by Githens and will drive over five courses which will test parking, distance perception and general compe tency of car handling. Second and third place winners will receive certificates of their achievement. "Bo-Bee' Zeigler was standing on the river bank at Spires Land ing with a gig when a large carp swam by. Zeigler speared the fish but the gig broke off and the carp swam away. Three hours later, Brogden Rucker, fishing with a line a quar ter of a mile downstream, hauled in the 10-pound escapee. The carp had passed Rucker's submerged line and the hook caught in the broken gig. Zeigler got credit for an assist. ."The Truly Great Man" is the subject of the transcribed program from the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass., which will be heard over Station KERG Saturday at 7:45 a.m. Harry c. He received bruises and cuts Thursday after noon when his car skidded on wet pavement and rolled over a 10 foot bank just south of Drain. He was alone in the car.
