A steak cut 1 to 114 inches thick will give much better results than a thinner one. A sirloin stcak cut lVz inches thick will serve six generously. BROILING DIRECTIONS vary with different ranges. However, these general directions may be followed with good results.; 1. Preheat broiler. 2. Slash fat edge of steak in several places to prevent curling. d. riace tne steak on the broiler rack and adjust the broiler pan so that the top surface of a 1-inch steak is 2 inches from the heat: l'4 or 2-inch steak 3 inches from the heat. This gives a moderate broiling temperature. When the top side of the steak is brown and the meat cooked half way through, season the steak, then turn it. (To test doneness, cut into steak close to the bone and note the color). It is recommended that you season broiled meats after they are browned, as salt tends to retard the browning process. Brown the total cooking time for rare done 20 minutes for medium done; life inch steaks 25 minutes for rare, 30 minutes for medium done; 2 inch steaks, 35 minutes medium; 2-inch steaks, 40 minutes rare, 45 minutes medium done. Wives of Two Student Pastors are Honored LOWELL At a baby shower Wednesday evening two young matrons of Lowell Church of Christ, Mrs. Glen Lida of Trent and Mrs. Bob Hamm of Eugene, were guests of honor. Mrs. Mark Graham was hostess at her home at Lowell, assisted by Mrs. Bert Fegles of Pleasant Hill and Mrs. Elwood Oliphant. Many gifts were presented and refreshments served. Husbands of the honored guests are student pastors at Northwest Christian College, Eugene. Glen Lida is pastor of the Lowell Church of Christ and Bob Hamm is mu sician. Strawberry Shortcake 2 cups sifted enriched flour 1 tbs. baking powder 5A tsp. salt 3 tbs. sugar 4 to 6 tablespoons lard 2 egg yolks, beaten Mi to '4 cup milk Melted butter or margarine 2 quarts strawberries, sweet ened to taste Sift flour with baking powder, salt and sugar. Cut in lard until mixture has a fine even crumb. Add beaten egg yolks and enough milk to make a soft dough. Turn onto lightly-floured surface and knead gently for fe minute. Divide into 2 parts, and roll out each part to tit a B-inch round layer cake pan. Put one round of dough in pan, brush with melted butter or margarine and place other round of dough on top. Bake in hot oven (450' F.) for 12 to 15 minutes. Remove to serving plate. Lift off top layer to put strawberries in the middle and replace. Spread more berries on top and garnish with whipped cream, if desired. To serve, cut in wedges like a pie. Yields 6 servings.
