The most common writing material in " the ancient world was papyrus, a crude paper made by gluing together strips of the pith ot the papyrus plant which grew in abundance along the Nile River. Among the - treasures of antiquity possessed by the Museum of Victoria University in Toronto, Canada, is a fragment of this papyrus paper -, upon which an Egyptian laborer penned a " letter to his wife on June 17, 1 B. C, by our ... calendar. The background for the letter Is simply . that Hilarion, the husband, is working in Alexandria while his wife, soon to give birth ' to their second child, was staying with her mother at Oxyrhynchus. Hilarion seeks to - comfort Alis with words of tender regard. But another portion of the letter concerns Itself with instructions concerning what to do if the baby happens to be an unwanted " girl: I pray thee and beseech thee, take care of the little child. And as soon as we receive wages I will send thee up. If thou art delivered, if It was a male child, let It live; if it was a female, cast it out. Now don't draw the conclusion that Hilarion was exceptionally brutal or lacking In fatherly affection. He was following a widely accepted and practiced custom of the age in which he lived; the exposure of un .. wanted children, particularly girls. You ought to be way ahead of me al ready. You know what I'm going to say next. The same contrast leaps to your mind as did to mine. We see mothers bringing . little children to the young prophet from """Nazareth, Jesus by name. He takes the chil ... dren up in his arms, tenderly. He blesses ' them. He warns us that it would be better ".' for a man to have a millstone hung around his neck and be dropped into the sea than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. .., This happens within a few years after " Hilarion writes his letter to Alis, and not to many miles away as we think of distances - today. Among the writings of the next century after this is the Epistle to Diognetus, written by a Christian named Mathetes. In com ., men ting on the manners and customs of the followers of this Jesus, Mathetes can say with just pride, "They marry, as do all others; they beget children; but they do not destroy their offspring." Chinese Students Need Help Benjamin Fine, educational editor of the New York Times, has performed a public service by revealing the plight of the 6,000 Chinese students now in this country. Of this number, half are recent graduates, many with advanced degrees. It is hard to say whose lot is harder that of the under graduates, of whom only about a thousand have scholarships, while the other 2,000, cut off from all funds from home, must shift for themselves, or that of the graduates. If these have degrees in engineering, chemistry, physics or mathematics they are usually able to find work commensurate with their abil ities in those fields. But if they are physi cians, they are not allowed to practice, and if they have majored in such subjects as economics or political science or any of the liberal arts, they can find no jobs other than of the most menial sort. Dr. Fine tells of talented doctors of philosophy who are barely keeping alive by washing dishes in restaurants or by pushing a flatiron in laun dries. Such pressures, combined with their own precarious situation in this country, are driv ing many of the promising young Chinese to the verge of distraction. Are there any of them in your community? Have you made a real effort to find out? Are you doing any thing to help them? There is much talk in American churches these days about the dis appearance of missionary opportunity in China. Here is missionary opportunity among Chinese right on our doorsteps. What are we going to do about it? Act as though it is only Chinese 6,000 miles way in whom we have any missionary interest?
