State Labor Commissioi the American-born Japanese who originally was denied a job with the State Tax Commission, went to work Wednesday for the com mission as a junior accountant. He moved here from Seattle, where he had held a job as a clerk for the Army port of embarkation. State Labor Commissioner W. E. Kimsey, who administers the state's Fair Employment Prac tices Law, said the tax commis sion originally denied Nishioka a job because of his race. The tax commission denied it, although Nishioka placed first in civil serv ice examinations. EARNINGS NEWS First quarter earnings of Pa cific Mills were 54 cents a share compared with a loss in the simi lar quarter last year. DuPont's earnings dropped from $1.26 for the first quarter of 1951 to $1.06 for the first quarter this year. In spite of higher taxes. National Biscuit's first quarter earnings rose to 60 cents against 57 cents last year. American ' Airlines earnings dropped sharply from 32 cents for the first three months of 1951 to 10 cents for the quarter just end ed. During the year 1951 Anacon da Copper earned $5.79, a moder ate improvement over the $5.38 reported for 1950. Safeway Stores , reported only 46 cents for the first quarter this year, down considerably from the 96 cents reported for the simi lar quarter In ' 1951. Portland General Electric's 96 cents for the first quarter this year is up from 82 cents last year. i the IMS Sus Explosions Halt At Dam Site PORTLAND m There will be no more explosions in the Co lumbia River at The Dalles Dam site until the annual salmon run is over. Col. T. H. Lipscomb, district Army engineer, said Tuesday the next blast would not come until late October, after the fall sal mon migration. Engineers set off three under water explosions this year before the salmon runs started. The largest was Sunday when rock was loosened in- preparing a powerhouse site.
