Better-Guard, Eugene, Ore., Poge 8 Sun., Apr. 13, 1952 7 Teen-Agers Face Charges Two carloads of teen-agers were taken to Eugene's police station Friday night. Seven Juveniles were charged with illegal posses lion of alcohol, snd David Lee Hogers, 21, of 1180 Hayes St., with contributing to the delinquency of minors. Two boys and two girls, all under age, were placed in cus tody after a 75 mile an hour chase across the Ferry St. Bridge and s mile and a half along Coburg Road about 10:30 p.m. WHEN THEIR car finally was stopped, the pursuing officer found 17 bottles of beer inside. The youngsters subsequently were released on their own re cognizance pending court appear ance with their parents the night of April 16. Police records listed this quar tet as Harlan Dale Weise, 18, 6025 McKenzie Hwy; Robert J. LeRoy, 19, Rt. 2, Springfield; Bertha Jane Redding, 19, of 1191 Echo Hollow Road; and Shirley Ann Hylton, 18, Box 232, Springfield. ROGERS WAS arrested with a trio of boys, 15, 18 and 17 years old. The car In which they were travelling was stopped at 7th and Willamette Sts. at 1:15 a.m. Sat urday, and four quarts of beer dis covered In the car. At headquarters, Rogers signed a statement indicating that he had purchased a case of quarts earlier In the evening and consumed It with the younger boys. He stated he had believed them old enough to drink. Rogers was placed in the city Jail pending arraignment on the contributing charge. The others were released to their parents to answer "illegal "possession" charges in municipal court next Friday. Fire Drill Prize Won by School At Santa Clara Students of Santa Clara School Friday were awarded a pennant for excellency In fire drills by representatives of Eugene's bu reau of fire prevention and Eugene-Lane County Fire Insurance Assn. The students, in graded drills, scored 497.9 out of a possible 500. St. Mary's School was second with the close score of 497.6. Fire Marshal Lester Barker praised the Crippled Children's Hospital School for its score of 491.6. Graded drills are held every two months in all District 4 schools. The next drill, however, will be held sometime In May to avoid year-end confusion. Special emphasis during drills this year has been put on check ing for missing students to be sure all are out of the building. Officials have hidden a few stu dents in remote parts of the build ings to see whether roll calls and final checks through the building would locate them. Doctors Face Damage Suits Separate $35,000 damage suits have been filed in Circuit Court against E. N. Rhnads, named as operator of a hospital and clinic at 675 W. Broadway, and Dr. Gladys Rathbone, identified as an osteo path working at the clinic. Plaintiff is Eva M. Harris, who charges negligence on the part of the doctor and the hospital in treating her for a broken arm. In each suit Mrs. Harris asks $35. 000 general damages and $743 special damages. The complaint alleges she broke the arm April 27, 1950, and was treated at the hospital. It further alleges negligence on the part of doctor and hospital, charging the cast was removed too soon and that the arm was not x-rayed after the cast was taken off. The result, Mrs. Harris charges, is that the right elbow and the fingers of the right hand are left useless. Schoolboy Files Suit Against Truck Driver An 8-vear-old boy allegedly in jured In an accident in front of his school has sued a rrucK oper ator for $17,000. In a suit filed in Circuit Court, the boy, Gerald M. Burke asks $15,000 general damages and $2000 special dam ages. Sueing through his guardian. Virgil I. Burke, the lad charges he was struck by a truck operated by Norris A. Olson in front ni the Harrison School in Cottage Grove at 3 p. m. Feb. 1, 1952. Olson is defendant in the suit. District to Study Fire Protection Rainbow Water District has called a public meeting Wednes. day at 7:30 p.m. in Springfield tire hall to discuss possible forma' tlon of a fire district. Jay C. Hicks, Jr., superintendent of the Rainbow District, has urged all persons living in his area to attend. The city of Springfield re cently gave notice to areas outside the city that they have until May 1 to take action toward helping themselves if they want Spring field aid at fires. Hicks said a representative of the state fire marshal's office will attend. Fire Chief Harry Krieger will attend as a representative of the city. Several houses Just outside city limits of Eugene and Springfield have burned recently, with large losses, because there has been no fire protection in those areas. Bessie Boyle Bessie Boyle, 690 High St, Eu gene, died Friday, April '11, 1952, at the age of 83. She was born July 30, 1868, at Philomath, Ore., of pioneers, Mr. and Mrs. James B. Irwin. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Axel Petersen of Eugene, and many nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be at Newton Cemetery at Philomath Monday, April 14, at 2:30 p.m. Simon-Lounsbury Mortuary, Eu gene, is in charge. Breeders Slate Rabbit Show Mri than 100 rabbits from San Francisco to the Canadian border will be entered in a rabbit show at th T.ne Countv Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday, April 19 and 20.
