Apr. 13, 1952 University Theatre Sets Light Operas Two popular American light operas will be the University of Oregon's University theatre spring "big show." "The Old Maid and the Thief and "The Devil and Daniel Webster" will be produced (April 18, 19. 23, 24. 25, and 26 in ithe University theatre. Collaborat ing with the theatre in producing the show will be the University School of Music. Gordon Howard. Eugene, will play Daniel Webster in "The Devil land Daniel Webster" which deals with the story of Jabes Stone 'played by Morris Beachy. Before this jury of damned souls, Webster pits his powers of oratory against the craftiness of Scratch in an efforts to rescue Jabes. SPIKE JONES, (and friend), the horn-tooting, bell-ringing master of musical mayhem, will bring his "City Slickers" and show to Eugene on Tuesday, April 22, under the sponsorship of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. To be held at the Arena Ballroom, the wacky performance will start at 8 p.m. Last time Spike was in Eugene he drew a crowd of 6000 persons at McArthur Court. HUUllC" lllioincilil GORDON HOWARD Have "Big Show" Leads Aciror Finds Success In Switch to Villainy HOLLYWOOD From hero to heavy could be the thumbnail screen career of big Jim Davis who portrays a ruthless foreman of a boss fur-trader in "The Big Sky" at RKO Radio. The role Is Davis' meatiest characterization since he switched from romantic leads to villainy in 'such recent action fare as "California Passage" and "Little Bfft Horn." j Lots of Docs in Rome HOLLYWOOD Research for Gabriel Pascal's production of Bernard Shaw's "Androcles and the Lion" uncovered the fact that uv-tfte fourth century A.D. Rome prrfbably had more practitioners of Internal medicine than any ma kor world metropolis of the present day..In fact, internal medicine was tha only form of specialized treat ment known by the physicians ofj that city and time. "THE DEVTL and Daniel Web ster" will be directed by Horace W. Robinson, associate professor of speech, with the help of Dr. E. A. Cykler, professor of music, who will direct the music. Donald Allton, assistant professor of music will direct the chorus. Others in the cast are Justice Hawthorne, played by Kieth Gebers, Grants Pass, and a chorus of students. THIS ONE ACT opera will mark the University debut of two of its four characters: Miss Mis tretta, and Anita McGregor, Port land, who plays the part of Laeti- tia. Both are freshmen in music at the university and have wide ex perience in tneir chosen Held. Miss Mistretta's voice figured strongly in her selection as Miss Oregon in 1951. She also placed first in a city-wide singing contest at Long Beach, Calif., three years ago. Last year she received the highest rating at the Newberg Competition at Newberg. Miss McGregor has also been very active in the music world in Portland. For the past two years a soloist for the Portland Rose Festival, she appeared as soloist with the Portland Symphonic Or chestra in their weekly broadcasts last summer. Also last summer, Miss McGregor sang the lead in the Portland Civic theatre's pro duction of Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Trial by Jury." LITTLE SISTER Rose is the featured vocalist: Fred Maddox is master of ceremonies, plays the ba;s and sings. Brother Cal, "the laiinhine cowbov." plays fiddle and carries the bigeest share of the comedv work. The youngest brother, Henry, plays mandolin.
