Eugene, Ore, Sun., Apr. 6, 1952 Paneling Helps Insulate Room I An easy way to refinish and at the same time insulate a room in an old house no matter how badly the plaster may be cracked is to apply a reflective vapor barrier, furring strips and pine paneling. If there are no holes in the walls a thorough coating of alu minum paint can be applied to the walls. Or paper the room with metal foil. Locate studs usually spaced 16 inches on centers by tapping for solid sounds. Securely nail thin furring strips horizontally around the room to provide nail ing bases for vertical pine boards. Tongue and groove lumber, with or without decorative edges, can then be nailed to the furring. Thin trimming strips can frame windows and form a new base board. Quarter-round molding or cornice strips can trim the wall and ceiling joints. ?J Ft Sri- ij - . - v . - pa; mitow ' '' f . iiii.i ii iii n iiimrrri ! inf . IFehTv photo. Wiltshire eitL'iav.nc) RICH SIMPLICITY OF A conventional nature is embodied in this home on College Hill owned by Mr. and Mrs. Frank A Tripp. Designed for comfortable living for two people, it is easily expanded by the use of a guest room and office, each with its own bath, to accommodate children and grandchildren on occasion. A fine view is available to the east and south from living, dining, master bedroom windows -and from the breakfast nook. An enclosed patio behind the house offers privacy for loung ing and sun-bathing. Heating is by oil-fired forced warm air automatically converted to a cooling plant when summer arrives. In the dining room, lighting is accomp lished by tube light concealed behind a cove around the room just below ceiling level and controlled by rheostat. In the living room, two flush ceiling fixtures center light for occasional card games. The house, designed by Architect Percy Bentley, is at 2380 Olive. THEM OR WE INSTALL THEM CONTRACT, OR TIME AND MATERIAL Overcoat for a House Makes It Snug and Rigid ' Ever think of giving your house an overcoat? It's a smart way to make lightly-built walls wind and weather tight and to add rigidity to an old house that shakes and vibrates in heavy storms. It gives the house a new look .and consid erably prolongs its life. Overcoating is the best con struction practice in renovating old houses. It can be done with shingles, either wood or compo sition, imitation brick siding, stucco, or a single thickness of brick veneer. v When it comes to a roof, its always good practice to lay a new roof over the old. It increases in sulating value and saves the cost of removing the old roofing. THE ADDITIONAL weight of an overcoat of shingles, composi tion siding, or stucco is carried by the framework of the house, which is nlentv strong, except in the! flimsiest construction. Brick veneer, however, calls for a broadening of the foundation to carry the weight and for a liberal use of metal ties driven into the old framework and imbedded in the mortar joints. For the best job in overcoat ing sidewalls, apply stiff sheets " of insulation to the old walls, then a layer of building felt or good quality building paper. Nails long enough to get a solid hold in the old wood are used for shingles or stucco lath applied oyer this. PROPERLY APPLIED stucco will greatly increase the stiffness of house walls. Shingles will not add so much. But a brick veneer will overcome almost any lack of rigidity. If you use shingle siding over old clapboards, you have to level UP the wall with wedge-shaped strips. However, shingles offer a big advantage in that they do not have to be painted unless you change your mind about color. 'nn fin it thm nrA.dinnn1 in a variety oi sort nues tnat win weather well.
