Approves Raises for 17,000 TACOMA P) The Wage Stabilization Board has approved pay and vacation improvements for 17,000 workers in 35 paper mills on the Pacific Coast, John Sherman, Tacoma, vice president of the international Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers, reported Tuesday. Sherman said the approval was granted Monday. According to the new contract, Sherman reported, paper mill workers will receive a seven-cent-an-hour wage Increase, ret roactive to June 1. The night dif ferential pay was increased an additional two cents per hour, he added. In addition, vacation benefits were increased from two weeks after five years of employment to two weeks after three years. Sherman said the W.S.B. action applies to 00 per cent of the Northwest's paper makers, in cluding employes of the Weyer haeuser Timber Co. at Spring field. , il )? !l .1. Aged Woman Likes Plowing WHITESBURG, Ky. (IP) In the spring, 103-year-old "Aunt Jane" Adams' thoughts turn to plowing. And as spring and her 104th birthday approached, those were her thoughts Wednesday "fol lowing the old plow and the fam ily mule around the hillsides just like I used to do in the long ago." Aunt Jane" comes from a long living family. Her 86-year-old brother, "Uncle Eli" Lucas, re cently became the father of his 18th child. Her father, Aaron Lucas, died at the age of 103. Her grandfather lived to be 105. "Here I am close around that, nd years yet to live," she said. "I'll outgo any of them. I never felt better In all my life, and there Is no reason why I won't go on." . Her birthday is Feb. 10. Two Inducted By Rotarians Eugene Rotarians Tuesday spent their weekly luncheon meeting listening to and taking part in an all-musical program. Rotarians sang "All Hail to Rotary," "Amer ica the Beautiful," "Home on the Range," "Grandfather's Clock," and "Old Black Joe." Then they sat back in their chairs to listen to a brass sextet from the University of Oregon school of music. Alton F. Baker, vice-president of the Eugene club, inducted John Warren and Dr. Willis B. Shepard as new Rotarians. Last week three new members were initiated. They were Emory Bruns, Worthy Har vey, and Gene Pitchford. Oldest Congressman To Seek Re-election WASHINGTON (P) The old est member of Congress, Rep. Doughton, (D-NC) said Wednes day he will seek re-election In his state's May primary. He is 88. Doughton said he had intended to retire at the end of his present term next January but a "very large number of people" had urged him to try for renomination, Air Command Reorganized .Western Defense To Be Streamlined HAMILTON AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (U.R The Western Air Defense Command will be streamlined with an eye toward increasing operational efficiency while reducing expenses by "some S2.000.000" annually. Command ing General Donald R. Hutchinson announced Wednesday. The Air Force will "further strengthen and expand" air de fense power in the 11 western states, Hutchinson said, by elim inating some units and manpower not required directly in air de fense. Using a recent reorganization of the 78th Fighter-Interceptor Wing at Hamilton Air Force Base as a model, the new set-up to be started next month will: 1. Establish a single unit term ed the air base group under each defense wing. 2. Place "housekeeping and overhead" groups, such as food and medical, subordinate to the air base group instead of each be ing independent as at present. 3. Eliminate a central group headquarters for fighter-interceptor, air rescue and WAF squadrons, making each respons ible to the defense wing com mand. Hutchinson said that other de fense force commands throughout the country were carrying out similar plans as part of a cam paign by the air force to "deter mine the most direct and eco nomical means of carrying out its responsibilities to the nation r JUST REMOTE PORTLAND (P) State Sen.
