Jack is former man ager of the University's radio station, KWAX.) Snowflakes swirled like 'copter blades as the two soldiers trudged toward the light they saw in the distance . ... They were tired, these soldiers, Al and Hay; and they were cold . . "Well, we're almost there," Al said. "Looks like a sentry up ahead." As they drew nearer, the sen try halted them, and took them to the Olficer of the Day's shack . . , "Well," the Captain said, "you guys aren't going to find any rides passing by here tonight. Un less you feel like walking fifty niiles, you might as well plan on spending Christmas . Eve with the Marines . . . I Al and Hay followed him (a sergeant) as he left the shack and crossed the field of newly fallen snow. Then the sergeant stopped in front of a small building . . . (Inside) a lanky hospital corps man closed the book he was read ing and stood up. "What've got here, Jeff? Patients?" "Nope," the Sergeant smiled. "Just travelers . , , The O. D. said you could bunk em here to night." He looked at Al and Ray. "This is the Doc. He's in the Navy and a reserve at that , . . but I guess he's okay." Al and Ray introduced them' selves. Then the Doc said, "Come on over here by the stove." He turned to Jeff. "And why don't you go over to that mess you call a mess hall of yours and bring back a pot of joe?" "And why don t you go swab deck?" "Listen, Jarhead ..." "You're lucky. I was goln' to bring" over some coffee anyway," the Sergeant said as he opened the door. "In your coffee I'll put poison." Best mess sergeant in the Ma rines," the Doc said. ... in a few minutes, Jeff was back. Doc poured the coffee. "Yep, this is Just like home. I always celebrate Christmas Eve sitting by the fire drinking coffee In the middle of Korea." "Doc, you sound kind of bitter In a way," Jeff said in mock sym "Oh, I guess I am kind of bit ter in a way," the Doc smiled. It's kind of tough to be away from the wife and kids at Christmas . . but I guess I'll live." "At least we have snow," Al added cheerfully. For more than an hour they talked of how they had spent their Christmases. And after a while, they forgot that they were in the middle of Korea ... All of them except Ray. He just sat there. Then, Jeff suggested, "Let's sing some Christmas carols." And they sang. (All except Ray.) Ray stood up. "I'm fed up with this stupid sentimental stuff. I don't know how in the hell grown men like you can go around mak ing fools of yourselves lust be cause it's Christmas Eve. There's just one place to celebrate Christ mas and it's not in the middle of Korea." He stomped to the other end of the dispensary. (Jack Vaughn's "Chrlstmns In Korea 1951", will be concluded in the Christmas Day LOOK & LISTEN.) . A ROSE: Christmas, ' A THORN: in Korea.
