Richard "Pancho" Gonzales
turned professional Tuesday, giv
ing up the amateur tennis cham
pionship of the United States for
a career that will net him at
least $60,000 the first year.
The 21-year-old Mexican
American star flew in from Los
Angeles and signed a one-year
contract to meet Jack Kramer in
a series of 90 to 100 matches cov
ering all of the country's major
cities.
"I'm turning pro for one rea
son," said the former ball boy
who learned his tennis on the
! public courts of Los Angeles. "It's
the same reason anybody would
tum pro for the money." .
The contract was signed with
Bobby Riggs, also a two - time
amateur champ who has been a
pro for several years. Riggs is
promoting the new venture, ob
viously figuring it will be more
profitable than trying to beat

ELMIRA. Sept. 21 This may
be Elmira's year to come into
their own on the gridiron and
eleven seasoned boys are the rea
son. Coach Jim Mulvahill. now in
his third year at the helm has
been content up to now to merely
build and even this year isn't
going out on a limb and predict
ing great things for the Falcons.
However, he could fill a start
ing lineup of veterans at nearly
every position. The team, though,
will be lighter than usual. The
heaviest man is a sophomore
guard. Gerald Ware. Ware tips
the standards a 180. Generally
though the team doesn't get out
of the 160-DOund class.
